God, God! You are hearing and sight

within lovers, and you are salvation and desire's fulfillment.

how lovely the lovesick one whom youth adorned!

I love; no trace of anything besides you could satisfy me.

Move gently with a heart that journeys with you,

as though it were a celestial sphere, and you its moon.

    والحب دائرةٌ شُعاعها الفكر

    Remembrance is your image, and the heart its center;

love is a circle whose radius is thought.

with a moon upon its horizon to which images bow.

I recite to the heart the verses of love, and when

it has learned the revelation by heart, it calls them chapters.

and time runs out, but tales of you never end.

How often you veiled yourself from my eye, which was kept awake

by a veil from you—yet you are not concealed.

a secret, a joy, and a fire with sparks within.

and mine, from the clouds, are tears called rain.

my eye is blind, while yours is graced with dark-eyed beauty.

Mine falters, stumbling against its bridle-bits,

but your gaze is a sword that spares nothing and leaves nothing.
