From the eye’s rising-place or the tears’ setting-place,

You revived, O repentance, a dead man of no use.

Indeed, my baptism has perished, and sin was its undoing.

O you who gloat, join the odd to the even.

When I raised the banners of repentance, down came

The standards of my sin; through raising, I achieved lowering.

Woe to you! I returned to life when I repented, just as

I had been dead, and I sold the dead man to the claimant.

The voice of resurrection calls me, and I hear it,

From the trumpet’s blast or from repentance prescribed by sacred law.

Through it I made a covenant with my Lord, and the covenant made me,

Through patience, ascetic devotion, and sorrows, able to hear.

Whenever we stumble, we rise, and God raises us up.

Our angel guards us by repelling and restraining.

O fallen one, hear the Lord saying to us:

“Indeed, I pardon the stumbling of the penitent mourned as dead.”

How many a sociable man has come to destroy himself in grief,

With despair’s knife, after being counseled to desist.

Had he sought refuge with the Mother of God,

He would not have lain struck down, his breast split open.

O root of repentance for a branch whose planting-place is in you,

And it is in a root’s nature to be tender toward the branch.

Be generous to us, for you are forever an intercessor,

For in you lies hope, in harm and benefit.
