For the natures of the base may harden

When you clothe them in the robe of honor.

And humiliation reforms them when they harden,

Just as refuse may benefit the dung beetle.

So if abasement is their safeguard,

Then respect is no safeguard for them.

For if honor could flourish in a base man,

Calamity would not have befallen Abu Dulama,

Nor would he, because of it and for its sake, have claimed

To be a prophet when he practiced imposture in al-Yamama.

A noble-natured man, if you honor him, grows gentle

In his ways, and is wronged by reproach.

He grows in honor, and so grows in forbearance,

Just as the base man grows harsher through it.

If you see humility in a man,

Do not fail to recognize him by that sign.

Nor trust one who says, 'I am...'

'And I am...' while his deeds are those of common folk.

You will regret it later, like al-Kusa'i, when

Remorse over his bow severed his thumbs.

Gently now: blame no soul for what is lost,

For what use is blame amid regret?

If an ignorant man calls you to reason,

Answer him, turning away: 'O regretful one!'

For between you two there is, in truth, a gulf

That grows as wide as the distance between Rome and Rama.

Have you then seen, O you who have lived an age,

A predatory eagle in the hands of a dove?

Likewise, you will never see a base man

Who appreciates honor when you honor him.
