Excel in praise, my muse, excel,

for Mary: she is a sea of tenderness.

God singled her out from all other creatures,

and raised her to the pinnacle of exaltation.

He called her his mother, and the mother was a virgin.

So, by God, what exaltation this is!

    قصيّاً حل في برج القُصُوِّ

    He came from her as God, sublime in rank;

far removed, he dwelt in the tower of remoteness.

He created her, then purified her, and freed

her perfect piety from the enemy's bondage.

She recited God's revelation, then ushered him

into a visible dwelling amid her recitation.

And when she was beheld by the eye of a Lord

almighty, he singled her out after that gaze.

He called her as she grew in grace, until

through her growth she rose beyond growth itself.

So he made her bear him, a mother and a virgin,

with a human nature exalted on high.

She is a daughter of Adam the man, but

of him as he was in a state of exaltation.

    وهذا القدس من ذاك الخلو

    And she never knew her forefather's sin at all;

and this holiness comes from that freedom from sin.

God drew near to her and dwelt within her,

and this purity comes from that nearness.

At her birth, all creation found peace,

and those in prison felt calm.

Through her, faith dawned, and it is light,

and unbelief's fire lies folded in extinction.

For I, O Virgin among virgins,

am your confidant at evening and at dawn.

So I shall not forget you, O adornment of creation,

even if the enemy urges me to forget.

And forgetfulness has never known the path of my love

for Mary; so leave it to the enemy.

Yes, I have risen through her, but

my sin has turned me back from my ascent.

I have yearned for you since childhood, but

my youth was caught in the snare of infatuation.

I desire repentance through you, and I have hope

that you will come to my aid with tenderness.
