بيدٍ قدحت بها الزناد الواري

Desires kindled within me the fire of their flint,

with a hand I used to strike the spark-giving flint.

فكسا دخان شواظهن أناملي

فكسا دخان شواظهن أناملي

صبغاً يريك الفعل بالآثار

صبغاً يريك الفعل بالآثار

So the smoke of their flames clothed my fingertips

in a stain that shows you the deed through its traces.

فأجبتُ حين سُئلتُ عن مسودِّها

فأجبتُ حين سُئلتُ عن مسودِّها

هذا السواد دخان تلك النار

هذا السواد دخان تلك النار

So I replied when asked what had blackened them:

This blackness is the smoke of that fire.
