ألا إحذر ملاقاةَ الرزايا

ألا إحذر ملاقاةَ الرزايا

فإن ورودَها إحدى البلايا

فإن ورودَها إحدى البلايا

Beware, indeed, of meeting misfortunes,

Beware encountering misfortunes,

For their coming is one of the afflictions.

For their occurrence is one of the afflictions.

لقد أبديتَ جهلاً فوق جهلٍ

لقد أبديتَ جهلاً فوق جهلٍ

وعمرُك تم إتمامَ الخطايا

وعمرُك تم إتمامَ الخطايا

You have indeed shown ignorance upon ignorance,

You have shown ignorance beyond ignorance,

And your life has run its course in completing sins.

And your life is complete with sins.

قضاء اللَه ينقضُ ما قضته

قضاء اللَه ينقضُ ما قضته

طبيعتُنا على تلك القضايا

طبيعتُنا على تلك القضايا

God's decree overturns what has been decreed

God's decree nullifies what our nature decreed

By our nature concerning those matters.

Regarding these issues.

فإن تحذر تجد يوماً سعيداً

فإن تحذر تجد يوماً سعيداً

يريك العمرَ آخرَه المنايا

يريك العمرَ آخرَه المنايا

For if you take heed, you will find a happy day,

If you are cautious, you will find a happy day

On which death shows you the end of life.

That shows you the end of life is death.

فيومك عاد آخرَ كل يومٍ

فيومك عاد آخرَ كل يومٍ

فخَف نفساً ذخائرها الأسايا

فخَف نفساً ذخائرها الأسايا

Thus each day of yours has become your last;

So your day has become the last of every day,

So fear a soul whose treasures are sorrows.

So beware, O soul, of its sorrows.

وثقِّف ما نويتَ به بِسرٍّ

وثقِّف ما نويتَ به بِسرٍّ

لأن اللَه كشاف النوايا

لأن اللَه كشاف النوايا

And set right what you have intended by it in secret,

And keep secret what you intend,

For God lays bare intentions.

For God discloses intentions.

ولا تجنح إلى أعمال قومٍ

ولا تجنح إلى أعمال قومٍ

نسوا ما قد أسرَّته الطوايا

نسوا ما قد أسرَّته الطوايا

And do not incline toward the deeds of people

And do not incline towards the deeds of people

Who forgot what their innermost hearts had concealed.

Who forgot what fantasies have concealed.

إذا أطراك إنسانٌ بمدحٍ

إذا أطراك إنسانٌ بمدحٍ

فقل كم من خبايا في الزوايا

فقل كم من خبايا في الزوايا

If someone extols you with praise,

If a man flatters you with praise,

Then say: How many secrets lie in corners!

Say, "How many secrets lie in corners!"

وإن ترغب وصايا الله تَمدَحْ

وإن ترغب وصايا الله تَمدَحْ

وصيَّتَه على كل الوصايا

وصيَّتَه على كل الوصايا

And if you desire God's commandments, you will praise

And if you desire God's commandments, you will be praised,

His commandment above all commandments.

His command surpasses all commandments.

ولا تفرح بخيرٍ قد جنته

ولا تفرح بخيرٍ قد جنته

عليك بخبثها أيدي الجنايا

عليك بخبثها أيدي الجنايا

And do not rejoice in any good already reaped

And do not rejoice in the good you have earned

Against you, in their malice, by the hands of wrongdoing.

With their evil hands, the perpetrators of sins.

فإن تشك الخطا يُسعدْك وقتٌ

فإن تشك الخطا يُسعدْك وقتٌ

رهيبٌ لا تفيد به الشكايا

رهيبٌ لا تفيد به الشكايا

For if you lament sin, a time will aid you—

For if you suspect error, time will make you happy,

A dreadful one, in which complaints are of no avail.

A terrible time in which complaints are useless.

وإن تُعط العليْ نفساً وجسماً

وإن تُعط العليْ نفساً وجسماً

تنل من جوده أسنى العطايا

تنل من جوده أسنى العطايا

And if you give the Most High your soul and body,

And if you give yourself, body and soul, to the Most High

You will gain the most splendid gifts from His bounty.

You will receive from His generosity the finest gifts.

وإن تُصلَب به طوعاً وحبّاً

وإن تُصلَب به طوعاً وحبّاً

بِمُورثه ترثْ إرث البقايا

بِمُورثه ترثْ إرث البقايا

And if you are crucified with Him willingly and in love,

And if you are crucified for His sake willingly and lovingly

Through His bequest, you will inherit the legacy of what remains.

You will inherit with Him the lasting inheritance.

فعش للَه تحيَ به سعيداً

فعش للَه تحيَ به سعيداً

وإلّا أنشبت فيك المنايا

وإلّا أنشبت فيك المنايا

So live for God, and through Him live happily,

So live for God, you will live happily through Him,

Or else death will sink its claws into you.

Otherwise death will seize you.

وإركب من مطاياه جَنيباً

وإركب من مطاياه جَنيباً

يفوت بوَخده وَخْدَ المطايا

يفوت بوَخده وَخْدَ المطايا

And ride a led mount from among His mounts,

And ride on His noble steed

Whose swift stride outstrips the stride of other mounts.

That surpasses other steeds.

هو الصبر الذي من سار فيه

هو الصبر الذي من سار فيه

تسير به الفضائل والمزايا

تسير به الفضائل والمزايا

It is patience; whoever journeys in it,

It is patience, which if one travels through

Virtues and excellences carry him onward.

The virtues and excellences travel through it.

كسلطانٍ سما في دَسْتِ ملكٍ

كسلطانٍ سما في دَسْتِ ملكٍ

عليه من فضائله حنايا

عليه من فضائله حنايا

Like a sovereign risen high upon a royal throne,

Like a sultan who attained kingship

Above him rise arches of his virtues.

Upon whom his virtues bestow favors.

يطوف عليه من مولاه كاسٌ

يطوف عليه من مولاه كاسٌ

يفوق شرابُها ماء الركايا

يفوق شرابُها ماء الركايا

A cup from his Lord is passed to him,

His Master presents him with a cup

Whose drink surpasses the water of wells.

Whose drink surpasses rainwater.

وتخفق دونه أعلام بِرٍّ

وتخفق دونه أعلام بِرٍّ

وبين يديه أعمال الهدايا

وبين يديه أعمال الهدايا

And banners of righteousness flutter beneath him,

And before him flags of righteousness flutter

And before him are acts of gift-giving.

And before him are deeds of guidance.

فقل وثناك يُسفرُ عن كمال

فقل وثناك يُسفرُ عن كمال

أنا ابن جلا وطلّاع الثنايا

أنا ابن جلا وطلّاع الثنايا

So say, while your praise reveals perfection:

So say, your praise reveals perfection,

I am the son of Jala, and the scaler of mountain passes.

“I am the son of glory and the rising of splendors.”

وما قد سُدتُ دون الناس إلّا

وما قد سُدتُ دون الناس إلّا

لأني لا أُعَدُّ من الرعايا

لأني لا أُعَدُّ من الرعايا

And I have risen above other people only

And I have only been preferred over people

Because I am not counted among the subjects.

Because I am not counted among the flock.

وكم خبّأت في نفسي كنوزاً

وكم خبّأت في نفسي كنوزاً

فقد وأبيك أغنتني الخبايا

فقد وأبيك أغنتني الخبايا

And how many treasures I have hidden within myself!

And how many treasures I have hidden in myself

For indeed, by your father, hidden things have enriched me.

The deceptions have made me needless.

ولن تخفى على المولى الخوافي

ولن تخفى على المولى الخوافي

لأن اللَه علام الخفايا

لأن اللَه علام الخفايا

And hidden things will never be concealed from the Lord,

The Master will not be unaware of the hidden things

For God knows all secrets.

For God knows the unseen.

ولذ بحمى البتولة حين تدعو

ولذ بحمى البتولة حين تدعو

بمريم إنها خير البرايا

بمريم إنها خير البرايا

And seek refuge in the Virgin's sanctuary when you call

And find happiness in the protection of chastity

Upon Mary; she is the best of creatures.

When you call upon Mary, she is the best of maidens,

لها في عالم الملكوت فضلٌ

لها في عالم الملكوت فضلٌ

كذا في عالم الدنيا مزايا

كذا في عالم الدنيا مزايا

She has eminence in the heavenly realm,

She has preference in the kingdom

And likewise distinctions in the realm of this world.

As she has excellences in the earthly world.

لها إرث السما والأرض طرّاً

لها إرث السما والأرض طرّاً

لها السلطان ثم لها القضايا

لها السلطان ثم لها القضايا

Hers is the inheritance of all heaven and earth;

She inherits the heavens and earth in full

Hers is dominion, and then hers are the judgments.

To her belongs sovereignty and judiciary.

لها الإكرام من إنسٍ وجنٍّ

لها الإكرام من إنسٍ وجنٍّ

ومن إنعامها غَفْرُ الخطايا

ومن إنعامها غَفْرُ الخطايا

She is honored by humans and jinn,

She is honored by mankind and jinn

And among her favors is the forgiveness of sins.

And through her grace, sins are forgiven.

لها منا سلام الله لما

لها منا سلام الله لما

أتى جبريل يهديها الهدايا

أتى جبريل يهديها الهدايا

To her, from us, God's greeting of peace, as when

To her from us is the peace of God since

Gabriel came bearing gifts to her.

Gabriel brought her guidance.
