تمازجَmingled فيin قلبيmy heart الصبابةُardent longing والشجوُand sorrow
فهاso here أناI لاnot أصحوI become sober وأنَّىand how ليَfor me الصحوُsobriety
Ardent longing and sorrow have mingled in my heart.
Youthfulness and passion intermingled in my heart,
So here I am, not sober—and how could sobriety be mine?
So here I am, never fully awake, lost in reverie.
خلوتI withdrew into solitude وقلبيand my heart بالهوىwith love متشاغلٌpreoccupied
فحسبُكso sufficient for you قلبٌa heart يقتضيrequires شغلَهits occupation الخلوُsolitude
I withdrew into solitude, my heart absorbed in love.
I secluded myself, my heart preoccupied with love,
So let a heart suffice you whose solitude demands preoccupation.
So suffice it for a heart to busy itself with seclusion.
فأُخفيso I conceal منfrom البُرْحاءtorment ناراًa fire توقدتflared up
فيَعلُنُso becomes evident منfrom آثارtraces أنحائهاits reaches النحوthe course
So I conceal a fire that torment has kindled,
I concealed a fire kindled in embers,
Yet its course becomes plain from the traces of its spread.
Revealing its traces in glowing coals.
علىdespite أننيthat I فيin الحبlove والشوقand longing ظالمٌunjust
لطيفٌsubtle كثيفٌdense بالنوىby separation والهوىand love نِضوwasted
Although in love and longing I am unjust,
Yet in love and longing I was unjust,
Subtle yet dense, wasted by separation and love.
Delicate, dense with purpose and desire.
وإنيand I أرىI see التصريحَplain declaration خيراًbetter منthan الكُنَىindirect allusions
وهلand whether يُمكِنُis possible التمويهُdisguise والمظهرُand the revealer السهوabsentmindedness
And I deem plain declaration better than veiled allusions.
I see frankness as better than allusion,
And can disguise succeed when absentmindedness lays it bare?
Is disguise and false pretense possible?
فأُنشدُso I recite بيتاًa verse زانadorned ميزانَهits meter الهوىlove
بمريمabout Mary فيin فنthe art العروضprosody هوit is البَأوpride
So I recite a verse whose meter love has adorned,
So I recite a verse whose balance love adorned,
About Mary; in the art of prosody, it is a source of pride.
With Maryam in prosody it is perfection.
مذsince استَدركتqualified لكنَّ'but' مدحيmy praise صفاتِهاher attributes
ولاand no جَرَمٌfault لاno بدعَwonder أيضاًalso ولاand no غروstrangeness
Since the 'but' in my praise has qualified her attributes,
Since I comprehended, though my praise of her traits,
And there is no fault, no wonder either, nor anything strange.
Is inevitable, neither novel nor pretentious.
فعزَّتso she grew exalted وقدand indeed عزتshe grew precious بذاthrough this وتنزهتand rose above
منfrom الغيرothers حتىuntil أذعنsubmitted الحضرtownsfolk والبدوand nomads
Thus she grew exalted, and by this grew precious, and rose above
She was honored and honored with this, transcendent
All others, until townsfolk and nomads submitted.
Above all others, the settled and nomad bow to her.
فأينso where ملاكٌan angel صالحٌrighteous أينwhere شأوهhis reach
فأخَّرهso it held him back عنfrom شأوهاher reach ذلكthat الشأوreach
Where, then, is a righteous angel? Where is his reach?
Where is the virtuous angel? Where is her equal?
For that very reach left him behind hers.
He is beneath her station, beneath that station.
عداran الأنبياthe prophets والرسلِand messengers فيin شوطthe course فضلهاher excellence
فهيهاتِyet how far أنthat يرقىrise إلىto فضلهاher excellence عَدْوrunning
The prophets and messengers ran the course of her excellence;
Except for the prophets and messengers in her sphere of superiority,
Yet how far any racing is from attaining her excellence!
Alas, no enemy can reach her superiority.
علتshe rose مذsince غلتgrew precious قدراًin worth إلىto قربِnearness ربهاher Lord
فكانتso she became لهto him أمّاًa mother فياso O حبذاhow splendid العُلْوexaltation
As her worth grew precious, she rose to nearness to her Lord.
She ascended until close to her Lord when ascended,
So she became his mother—how splendid that exaltation!
Becoming His mother, blessed is that ascent!
وقدand indeed زينتهاadorned her فيamong النساءwomen بِكارةٌvirginity
كماas زينadorned الأشجارَthe trees فيin روضهاher garden السروthe cypress
And virginity adorned her among women,
Chastity adorned her among women,
As the cypress adorned the trees in her garden.
As a cypress tree adorns a garden.
أياO شادياًa singer يَشتارgathers as honey حلوَthe sweetness مديحهاpraise of her
أعدrepeat ذكرهاmention of her يحلوbecomes sweet لناto us ذلكthat الحلوsweetness
O singer gathering the sweetness of her praise,
O bard, choose the sweetness of praising her,
Mention her again; that sweetness will delight us.
Recalling her makes that sweetness sweet for us.
ولاand do not تذكرُنَّmention emphatically الصفوَpurity فيهاin her بغيرهاwith someone other than her
فلاfor no خيرgood فيin عيشliving إذاif لمnot يكنthere is صفوpurity
And never speak of her purity by comparison with another,
Do not mention purity but for her,
For there is no good in living without purity.
No good in life without its quintessence.
ألاbehold إنindeed صفوpurity الحبlove صنوانِtwin offshoots صَفوناour purity
فهاتواthen bring لهاfor her صِنواًa peer وأنَّىand how لهاfor her صنوa peer
Lo, love's purity and our purity are twin offshoots.
Behold, the quintessence of love are two precious ones,
Then bring her a peer—but how could she have a peer?
Bring for her precious things, where are her treasures?
تملكتyou took possession ياO عذراءVirgin منيfrom me جوارحيmy limbs
فحبكso love of you ليfor me فيin كلevery جارحةٍlimb جِزوa portion
O Virgin, you have taken possession of my limbs.
You have taken possession, O maiden, of my faculties,
Thus love of you forms part of every limb of mine.
Your love for me in each part a portion.
فلمso not يبقَremained ليfor me فيin الذاتِthe self عُضوٌa limb مقسَّمٌapportioned
لغيركfor someone other than you بلrather كليall of me إلىto كلكِall of you عُضوa limb
So no limb of my being remained allotted
No part of my being remains undivided
To anyone but you; rather, my whole being is a limb joined to yours.
For another, all of me belongs completely to all of you.
وأزهوand I exult فتعرونيthen seizes me لذكراكat remembering you هزَّةٌa tremor
كماas اهتزtrembled غصنٌa bough ماسswayed إذwhen هزهshook it الزهوexultation
And I exult; a tremor seizes me at the thought of you,
I sway intoxicated when you disrobe me with your mention,
As a swaying bough trembled when exultation shook it.
As a supple bough sways when breeze sways it.
محاerased عفوكمyour pardon ذنبيmy sin إذاwhen جئتI came طائعاًobediently
ولوand if لمnot يكنthere were ذنبٌa sin لماwould not عُرفbe known العفوpardon
Your pardon erases my sin when I come in obedience.
Erase my sin when I come obedient,
And were there no sin, pardon would never be known.
If not for sin, how would pardon be known?
