And a night I thought would have no dawn,

And its rain cloud had burst forth with water.

It and its lightning, when it appeared, seemed like

Two seas of fire and water, surging.

Two opposites came together in dazzling accord,

And each opposite reveals its radiant counterpart's excellence.

This one drowns humankind with its water,

And that one scorches the eyes with its light.

    يبغي البرازَ خصمُه قد انذعر

    And thunder, roaming within it, had roared;

It sought single combat; its foe had taken fright.

And rain poured down from the clouds' skin,

And lightning struck sparks from its flint.

So I was within it, under threat,

Like a lover lamenting a beloved who had forsaken him,

    Drowned in his dripping tears,

And burned by the blazing fire of longing.

So the waters of his eyes enfold his heart,

And the fires of thought lift his gaze.

And is morning alive when dawn breaks,

Or is it gone, dead, drowned, and buried?

Or am I, like Noah's people, among the cautionary examples?

Or am I like Lot's people, amid destruction?

O Lord, through Mary, deliver me from Saqar.
