    Indeed, all tenderness and refinement

have come together in that wondrous sex.

O you who wrong your wife,

you are, by God, deplorably wanting in taste!

Vile is he who preys upon a woman—for

she is only like a ewe, while he is a wolf.

What honor is there for falcons that ravage

doves, or for a lion that ravages a ward?

And if nature has granted you mastery over

her body, reason is a formidable sovereign.

Whoever comes to be ruled by a harsh nature

    ends despised by the gentle-natured.

Between the two spouses lies nothing but

an equal covenantal right that never lapses.

Thus whoever bears the covenant must uphold what

the covenant enjoins; if he proves false, he fails.
