    فلتَعلم الحسناءُ ذات الدلال

    Beauty in the face is swift to fade;

so let the lovely, coquettish woman know:

beauty is a sovereign ruling upon

the throne of youth; if that fades, it fades.

She becomes infirm and is reckoned as such,

and how often, how often, beauty assailed us and charged!

Today, a beautiful face; and tomorrow

this face wears the ugliest guise.

Then, for her, the lights of that beauty disappear,

and the ember of that beauty goes out.

    وليس يبقى للنزال رجال

    The sword glances off, and the spears bend;

and no men remain for combat.

O mistress of beauty, your beauty does not

last except as a phantom lasts.

For beauty of face passes away like dust,

while beauty of character stands firm as the mountains.

So beautify your character and adorn your intellect,

so that you may captivate beauty that never fades.

This is simple beauty, and no

    simple substance ever undergoes dissolution.

The branch is of no use if there is no

benefit in the root, however it may swagger and grow tall.

The difference between branch and root is like

the difference between debt and capital.

So let him beware bankruptcy who is not

possessed of capital; permanence is impossible.
