O pallor of sunset, what god's

Radiance died in your wounded eyelid?

What virgin dawn upon your brow

Had its longing strangled by night, O my love?

Indeed, in your tender voice are wounds,

A thousand sighs surge within it, and another sigh.

And on your pure face lies a pallor,

Like the pure morning whose radiance has dimmed.

What is it that curves upon your lips

In majesty—a smile, or a god?

O spring of love, this spring of yours—

Its fragrance flooded night and morning.

Push the night aside, O Suad, and let

Your sweet dawn be a bloom in its youth.

Everything upon your youth is a wedding,

Its song is in the mouth of dawn and sunset.

Thirsty lips long for you as a cup,

    Wondrous, never sullied by lips.

I love you, O Suad, as a song

Whose echo the gentle brook repeated.

I love something upon your lips

That crept into the parting of the lips and lost its way.

I love you however you may be—wounds

In my ribs, or a delusion, or a prayer.

Oh, the bliss of my aching heart! Upon it

    Lies a sweet maiden's shadow—oh, its bliss!
