    Do not ask what ails me—for what ails me

    Other than what you wish, O cruel one?

    Do not ask what ails me; I have not been harmed

    By my illness and its visible traces.

    Do not ask—this is women's deceit.

    Do not ask what ails me: I have only good health.

    If pains shattered my breast, I would not

    Complain of my weakness and my pains.

    You deceived me with oaths, deceitful woman.

    How cruel you were, and how foolish I!

    حسبتها شعشاعة صافيه

    You filled my cups to the brim with wine;

    I thought it a light, clear wine.

    Would that neither the wine nor its jar had ever existed!

    The wine has already turned foul in the vessel.

    I thought you poetry and its summits,

    And the note of the soothing lyre,

    And the shimmering smile of the shores,

    And the fragrance of the meadow and the hill.

    ما أنت إلّا لطخة داميه

    I thought you the laurel upon my brow;

    You are nothing but a bloody stain.

    Night made it eternal on the crown of my head,

    On a mad, sinful night.

    Your red lips—ah, how often

    I sipped them in the pitch-dark night,

    In night's bedchamber—I know it well—

    On a bed that stood in the corner.

    So after me they became—oh, their humiliation!—

    Grim, wilted, withered.

    I left them, in my drunkenness, as a remnant,

    The refuse of night and of my desires.

    People drink them—on my word—

    Pure, yet unchaste.

    I sang you dancing melodies

    From the pulse of the brook and the watercourse.

    I sang them as a song of love,

    Immortal in its verses and its rhyme.

    Alas for melodies wasted on an ear

    Whose melodies are the rattling of the abyss!

    By God, had I sung them to a rock,

    It would have danced, drunk, to my melodies,

    لكنّني غنّيتها غانيه

    And the river and its willows would have applauded;

    But I sang them to a wanton woman.

    عودي إليها جيفة باليه

    Return to filth, disreputable woman;

    Return to it, a rotting carcass.

    عودي إذن للظلمة الخاويه

    You scoffed at my heart and its weddings;

    Return, then, to the empty darkness.

    Glory was not decreed for a creature

    Treacherous, striving, and criminal.
