    Bring me the tambourine, Nada, and the lutes.

    Our guest today, beloved, is a poet.

    A poet who fed beauty and nourished

    the heart of poetry with tears from eye sockets.

    He melted dawn into the eyelids of maidens,

    like dew melting in the eyelids of blossoms.

    He bestows light upon the crowns of hills,

    dipping love's brush into feelings.

    سكرةً تبعثُ اللَّظى في الضمائر

    We are a people who consider life nothing but

    an intoxication that kindles flame in souls;

    قبل قيسٍ، وبعد قيسِ العشائر

    an intoxication whose taste a thousand Qayses savored

    before Qays and after Qays of the clans;

    an intoxication upon which youth bestows

    the heart's fresh blooms and the fragrance of inmost secrets.

    Poet of fair maidens, sing to the fair maidens and enchant!

    Indeed, we have known you, brother of love, as an enchanter.
