O you so intent on checking your wealth,

Be intent on examining your condition.

    لَيْتَهَا فِي يَدَيْكَ مِنْ بَعْضِ مَالِكْ

    You are miserly with wealth, but not with sins;

If only, in your hands, they were part of your wealth!

It is no wonder—while you condemn your own

self to starvation, begrudging what you possess—

that you see people dying of hunger and do not

pity a hungry person or feel compassion for one dying.

What you have amassed cannot ransom you; for you are,

today or tomorrow, bound for the grave.

You are nothing in life, yet it may be

benefited by the heirs after you are gone.
