O aspiring nation, in whose breast

    Youth seethes and daring throbs,

    Between Lebanon and Syria's shore,

While the land is drought-stricken and the sands barren,

What does your radiant eye seek,

Darkened by the weight of fever?

How wondrous is Tyre, swimming in the light,

And the sea's smiling waves gleam.

In the blue of the lovely shore she shone,

White, with flags fluttering above her.

And there are sails that ripple,

And the echo of oars as they clash.

Ships of sturdy cedar he makes ready,

    Hiram, surveying their cargoes,

With the black scepter, gleaming with

    Pearls, glowing in ordered array.

Within them, gold and porphyry, and

Silk cloth and precious agate lie in heaps.

Go forth, for Melqart blesses those who departed,

With longing behind and hope ahead.

From the land of Sidon and from Aradus,

And Byblos, they drew the ropes taut and set forth,

To broaden the paths of life and unfurl

The banner of civilization while the peoples lay asleep.
