إِذَا انْتَسَبْتُ أَمَامَ النَّاسِ وَانْتَسَبُوا
I am the stranger, with neither kin nor homeland.
I am the stranger, with neither family nor homeland,
When I declare my lineage before the people, and they declare theirs,
When I declare my origins before others, and they declare theirs.

nor have I a banner for which, when the call to arms is sounded, there marches forth
Nor a banner that, when the call to arms sounds, is defended
a clamorous army, defending it against those who hunt my people down.
By the marching, clamorous army drawn from my people's proud nobles.

Whoever is a stranger in his own homeland—
And whoever is a stranger in his own lands,
no wonder if earth and shooting stars disown him.
It is no wonder if earth and shooting stars disown him.

We have become a ruin, and our homeland a ruined dwelling,
We and our homeland have become a ruined dwelling,
through whose courtyard destruction creeps, born of our own disease.
Through whose courtyard ruin creeps from our disease.

Centuries pass, and no usurper relinquishes it
Centuries pass, and no usurper vacates it
except for another usurper to seize it by the sword.
Except for another usurper to occupy it by the sword.

وَلَيْسَ عِلَّتُهُ غَازٍ وَمُنْتَدَبُ
Ignorance, religion, and neglect are its malady;
Ignorance, religion, and neglect are its disease,
its malady is neither an invader nor a foreign Mandatory ruler.
Neither an invader nor a mandate-holder is its disease.

Within us lie the remedy and the disease—oh, what a wonder!
The cure is in us, and the disease is in us—how astonishing!
Yet we ourselves are seized with wonder at our condition.
And we are struck with wonder at our condition.

If we aspire to the heights and seek them,
So if we aspire to the heights, seeking them,
then that ruined dwelling deserves demolition.
Then that ruined dwelling deserves to be torn down.

Come, sons of my homeland! People, one and all,
have readied their resources to raise their homelands.
Have made preparations to uplift their homelands.

Rise toward glory, and let us build ourselves a homeland
whose foundation is knowledge, not Indian blades.
Whose mainstay is knowledge, not sharp Indian swords.

Let resolve and deeds raise its portal
And let resolve and deeds raise its throne
above the two Simāks—not words and speeches.
Above the two Simāk stars—not words and speeches.

Long live a nationhood that has become our lineage,
Long live a national identity that has been our kinship,
gathering our scattered ranks where ancestry failed us.
Uniting our scattered people when blood kinship eludes us.

فَلَا يُشَرِّفُهُ دِينٌ وَلَا لَقَبُ
Whoever has no people in whom to take pride
And whoever has no people in whom to take pride,
is ennobled by neither faith nor title.
Neither religion nor title brings him honor.

وَدِينُهُ الوَفْقُ وَالإِخْلَاصُ لَا الشَّغَبُ
My faith is mine alone; but before it stands my homeland,
My religion is my own, but before it comes my homeland;
whose creed is concord and devotion, not strife.
Its religion is concord and loyalty, not strife.

By God, we shall advance only when
By God, we shall rise only when there is unity among
those principles unite in homelands and hearts.
Those minarets and domes in our homelands.

Let us honor knowledge, whatever its source,
And let us honor knowledge, whatever its source,
for it is a cause of brotherhood and ascent.
For it is a means to brotherhood and greatness.

Knowledge has neither religion nor homeland in this world;
Knowledge has no religion in this world, nor a homeland;
for knowledge is like light: no land confines it.
For knowledge is like light: no lands have hemmed it in.

Let the language of Ḍād—which was called
And let the language of ḍād, which was called
the Mother of Languages—regain a youth clad in a new mantle.
The mother of languages, regain youth clad in a fresh mantle.

If we are not all Arabs by origin,
beneath its banner we are all Arabs.
Then beneath its banner we are all Arabs.
