وقال: أنا الدهر أغفو قليلا

And said: I am Time; I doze a little,

It said: I am time, I slumber briefly,

But my onslaught is fierce—fierce.

But my might is severe, severe.

فأعبث بالناس ضوءا وظلا

وساعات حزن وأنسام غيد

So I toy with people—light and shadow,

I make mischief with people, light and shadow,

And hours of sorrow, and graceful breezes.

وأمنحهم أمنيات عذابا

يعيشون فيها حياة العبيد

And I grant them sweet wishes,
