أَبوكَyour father وَعَمّيand my uncle ياO مُعاوِيَMu‘awiya أَورَثاboth bequeathed
تُراثاًan inheritance فَأَولىso most entitled بِالتُراثِto the inheritance أَقارِبُهhis kinsmen
Your father and my uncle, O Mu‘awiya, both bequeathed
Your father and uncle, O Mu'awiya, inherited
an inheritance; his kinsmen have first claim to it.
A legacy, so the relatives are more entitled to the legacy
فَماso what بالُis the matter with ميراثِthe inheritance of الحُتاتِal-Hutat أَكَلتَهُyou devoured it
وَميراثُand the inheritance of حَربٍHarb جامِدٌsolid لَكَfor you ذائِبُهits liquid part
Then why have you devoured al-Hutat's inheritance,
Yet you seized the legacy of the Hittites and consumed it
while the liquid part of Harb's inheritance remains solid for you?
While the legacy of Harb remains intact, melting for you
فَلَوso if كانَwas هَذاthis الحُكمُjudgment فيin جاهِلِيَّةٍan age of ignorance
عَرَفتَyou would have known مَنِwho المَولىthe kinsman القَليلُfew حَلائِبُهhis supporting bands
Had this judgment been in the age of ignorance,
Had this been the rule in pre-Islamic times
you would have known which kinsman had few supporting bands.
You'd have known who has little camels among his relatives
وَلَوand if كانَwas هَذاthis الأَمرُmatter فيin غَيرِoutside مِلكِكُمyour dominion

And had this matter been outside your dominion,
Had this matter been outside of your rule
you would have repaid it, or the drinker would have choked on water.
You'd have given it up or choked drinking its water
وَلَوand if كانَit had happened إِذwhen كُنّاwe were وَلِلكَفِّand for the hand بَسطَةٌfree scope
لَصَمَّمَwould have cut through عَضبٌa keen sword فيكَthrough you ماضٍkeen مَضارِبُهits striking edges
And had it happened when we had a free hand,
Had it been when we had the upper hand
a keen sword would have cut through you, its striking edges sharp.
A raging anger against you would have its swords striking
وَقَدand indeed رُمتَyou sought أَمراًa thing ياO مُعاوِيَMu‘awiya دونَهُin its way

And you have sought a thing, O Mu‘awiya, before which stand
You've undertaken a matter, O Mu'awiya, beyond which
the swift wolves of ‘Ilwadd, whose ascents are hard.
Are rough patches and difficulties in its levels
وَماand not كُنتُI was أُعطيI give النِصفَfair terms مِنout of غَيرِlack of قُدرَةٍpower

I would not grant fair terms from lack of strength
I'd not give half without ability, except to you
to anyone but you, even if his battalions bore down on me.
Even if its writings were imposed upon me
أَلَستَare you not أَعَزَّthe mightiest الناسِof people قَوماًin clan وَأُسرَةًand family

Are you not the mightiest of men in clan and family,
Are you not the most honorable people and clan
and their staunchest defender of a neighbor when his side is assailed?
And the best neighbor when their side is wronged?

And after the Prophet and his household, no
And after the Prophet and his family no one was born
chaste woman has borne a man who approaches the likes of me.
Like me, a stallion among men who rivals him

My father is Ghalib, and the man Sa‘sa‘a is the one
My father is the victorious, and the man is as steadfast
whose descent reaches Darim—who can rival his lineage?
As Darim, so who can match him?

I am the son of lofty mountains, as numerous as the pebbles,
I am the son of the Syrian mountains, innumerable
and the earth's root is my root—who can reckon it?
And my lineage is their bedrock, so who can take account of it?

And my house stands by a flank whose courtyard is spacious,
And my house has a spacious courtyard
and below it is the full moon, with its shining stars.
With the shining moon and its stars below it

And how many a forefather of mine, O Mu‘awiya, has ever been
And how many a father of mine, O Mu'awiya, never ceased
bright-browed, rivaling the wind, never turning his side away.
To be struck by the winds however much its sides were harmed

Branches of the two Maliks gave him lineage, and never was
The branches of rulers grew yet your father was not
your father, the man of ‘Abd Shams, fit to address him as an equal.
One addressed but a servant of Shams talking to him

You see him like a sword blade, stirred to generosity,
You see him as a sword blade trembling with dew
open-handed, having met glory since his moustache first sprouted.
A steed who met glory since its rider first quenched his thirst

Long of sword-baldric since his earliest days—never were
Tall, long of sword since before there was
Qusayy and ‘Abd al-Shams among those who could address him as an equal.
Qussay, while your father was one who addressed him
