كَشَفتَyou cleared away عَنِfrom الأَبصارِthe eyes كُلَّall عَشاًdimness of sight بِهاin them
وَكُلُّand every قَضاءٍjudgment جائِرٍunjust أَنتَyou عادِلُهits rectifier
You have cleared the eyes of all their dimness,
And every unjust judgment you set right.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَhas learned الظُلمُinjustice الَّذيwhich سَلَّunsheathed سَيفَهُits sword
عَلىagainst الناسِthe people بِالعُدوانِwith aggression أَنَّكَthat you قاتِلُهits slayer
And injustice has learned—it that unsheathed its sword
against the people in aggression—that you are its slayer.
وَلَيسَand is not بِمُحيِيa giver of life to الناسِthe people مَنone who لَيسَis not قاضِياًjudging
بِحَقٍّwith justice وَلَمand has not يُبسَطbeen spread عَلىover الناسِthe people نايِلُهhis bounty
And none gives life to the people who does not judge
with justice, and whose bounty is not spread among the people.
فَأَصبَحَso became صُلبُthe backbone of الدينِreligion بَعدَafter اِلتِوائِهِits bending
عَلىfor الناسِthe people بِالمَهدِيِّthrough the rightly guided one قَوَّمَstraightened مايِلُهits crooked part
So religion's backbone, after its bending,
was set straight for the people through the rightly guided one.
حَمَلتَyou bore الَّذيwhat لَمdid not تَحمِلَbear الأَرضُthe earth وَالَّتيand that which
عَلَيهاabove it فَأَدَّيتَand so you discharged الَّذيwhat أَنتَyou حامِلُهits bearer
You bore what the earth could not bear, nor that which
is above it; and you discharged what you bear
إِلىto اللَهِGod مِنof حَملِbearing الأَمانَةِthe trust بَعدَماafter
أُضيعَتit was neglected وَغالَand snatched away الدينَreligion عَنّاfrom us غَوايِلُهits calamities
to God, in bearing the trust, after
it had been neglected and its calamities had robbed us of religion.
جَعَلتَyou placed مَكانَin place of الجَورِoppression فيon الأَرضِthe earth مِثلَهُits equal
مِنَof العَدلِjustice إِذwhen صارَتpassed إِلَيكَto you مَحاصِلُهits revenues
You put in place of oppression on earth an equal measure
of justice, when its revenues passed into your hands.
وَماand not قُمتَyou rose حَتّىuntil اِستَسلَمَsurrendered الناسُthe people وَاِلتَقىand closed together
عَلَيهِمupon them فَمُthe mouth of الدَهرِTime العَضوضِfiercely biting بَوازِلُهits fangs
And you did not rise until the people had surrendered, and there closed
upon them the fangs in the maw of biting Time.
وَحَتّىand until رَأَواthey saw مَنone who يَعبُدُworships النارَfire آمِناًsafe
لَهُwith him جارُهُhis neighbor وَالبَيتَwhile the House قَدalready خافَfeared داخِلُهits entrant
And until they saw the worshipper of fire, with safety assured
to his neighbor, while whoever entered the House was afraid.
فَأَضحَواso they became بِإِذنِby the leave of اللَهِGod بَعدَafter سَقامِهِمtheir sickness
كَذيlike one with النَتفِplucked plumage عادَتreturned بَعدَafter ذاكَthat نَواصِلُهits shed feathers
So, by God's leave, after their sickness they became
like a plucked bird whose feathers grew back afterward.
رَأَيتُI saw اِبنَson of ذُبيانٍDhubyan يَزيدَYazid رَمىhurled بِهِhim away
إِلىto الشَأمِSyria يَومَon the day of العَنزِthe she-goat وَاللَهُand God شاغِلُهwill preoccupy him
I saw Yazid, son of Dhubyan, hurled away
to Syria on the Day of the She-Goat; and God will preoccupy him
بِعَذراءَwith a virgin لَمhas not تَنكِحshe wed حَليلاًa husband وَمَنand whoever تَلِجshe enters

with a virgin who has never wed a husband; and when she enters
a man's arms, his fingers fail his forearms.
وَثِقتُI was certain لَهُfor him بِالخِزيِof disgrace لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُهُI saw him

I was certain of disgrace for him when I saw him
on the mule, slung as a load, his fetters heavy.
