وَلَولا أَنَّ أُمّي مِن عَدِيٍّ

وَلَولا أَنَّ أُمّي مِن عَدِيٍّ

وَأَنّي كارِهٌ سُخطَ الرَبابِ

وَأَنّي كارِهٌ سُخطَ الرَبابِ

Were it not that my mother is of ʿAdī,

Were it not that my mother is an Adite,

And that I am loath to incur al-Rabāb’s wrath,

And that I abhor the wrath of Rebab,

إِذاً لَأَتى الدَواهي مِن قَريبٍ

إِذاً لَأَتى الدَواهي مِن قَريبٍ

بِخِزيٍ غَيرِ مَصروفِ العِقابِ

بِخِزيٍ غَيرِ مَصروفِ العِقابِ

Then calamities would soon have come,

Verily the catastrophes would come very soon

With disgrace whose punishment could not be averted.

With disgrace that has no averted punishment.
