اِبكِweep عَلىfor الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj عَولَكَyour wailing ماas long as دَجاgrew dark
لَيلٌnight بِظُلمَتِهِin its gloom وَلاحَand appeared نَهارُdaylight
Weep for al-Hajjaj, wailing, as long as night grows dark
Cry over Al-Hajjaj, your hope in him has failed
in its gloom, and daylight appears.
The night is dark, and the day has not dawned
إِنَّindeed القَبائِلَthe tribes مِنof نِزارٍNizar أَصبَهَتhave become
وَقُلوبُهاand their hearts جَزَعاًin anguish عَلَيكَfor you حِرارُburning hot
Indeed, the tribes of Nizar have come to be
The tribes of Nizar certainly mourned you
with hearts burning in anguish for you.
Their hearts grieved for you, burning hot
لَهفيmy grief عَلَيكَfor you إِذاwhen الطِعانُspear-fighting بِمَأزِقٍin a narrow place
تَرَكَleft القَناthe spears وَطِوالُهُنَّand their long ones قِصارُshort
Alas for you, when spear-fighting in a narrow place
My longing for you when the slanderers were in dire straits
left the spears—their long ones now short.
They left the spear behind, and their heights were made short
إِنَّindeed الرَزِيَّةَthe grievous loss مِنof ثَقيفٍThaqif هالِكٌa dead man
تَرَكَleft العُيونَthe eyes وَنَومُهُنَّand their sleep غِرارُscant
Indeed, the grievous loss is a man of Thaqif, now dead,
Indeed the calamity from Thaqif is destruction
who left the eyes with only scant sleep.
It left the eyes sleepless and their slumber disturbed
