وَجَدناwe found خُزاعِيّاًa man of Khuzaʿa رَسِنَّةَRasinnah مازِنٍof Mazin
وَمِنهاand from them إِذاwhen هابَfeared الكُماةَthe armored warriors جَسورُهاtheir bold champion
We found Rasinnah of Mazin to be a Khuzaʿi,
and from them comes their bold champion when armored warriors fear,
عَلىin facing ماwhat يَهابُfear القَومُthe people مِنof عاجِلِprompt القِرىhospitality to guests
إِذاwhen اِحمَرَّreddened مِنfrom نَفحِthe breath الصَباof the east wind زَمهَريرُهاits bitter cold
in facing what people dread—promptly feeding guests—
when its bitter cold reddens under the east wind's breath.
وَهُمand they يَومَon the day وَلّىturned أَسلَمٌAslam ظَهرَهُhis back القَناto the spears
وَفَرَّand fled وَشَرُّand the worst الناسِof men بَأساًin valor فَرورُهاtheir habitual fugitive
And they, on the day Aslam turned his back on the spears
and fled—the worst of men in valor is the one who always flees—
وَهُمand they يَومَon the day of عَبّادِʿAbbad بنِson of أَخضَرَAkhdar بِالقَناwith spears
وَبِالهِندَوانِيّاتand with Indian swords بيضاًgleaming white ذُكورُهاtheir hard-tempered blades
and they, on the day of ʿAbbad ibn Akhdar, with spears
and with Indian swords, their hard-tempered blades gleaming white,
أَبَواthey refused أَنto يَفِرّواthey flee يَومَon the day كُرَّa charge was made عَلَيهِمُagainst them
وَلاand not يَقتُلَslays الأَبطالَthe champions إِلّاexcept كَرورُهاtheir tireless charger
refused to flee when a charge was made against them;
and none slay champions but their tireless chargers.
جَلَواthey dispelled بِالعَواليwith long spears وَالسُيوفِand swords غِشاوَةًa veil
يَكادُalmost مِنَfrom الإِظلامِthe darkness يَعشىbecomes dim-sighted بَصيرُهاits keen-sighted observer
They dispelled with long spears and swords a veil
whose darkness almost blinds the keen-sighted.
وَهُمand they أَنزَلواthey lodged هِنداًHind مَنازِلَdwellings لَمnot تَكُنhad been
لَهُمtheirs قَبلَهاbefore it إِلّاexcept مَصيراًa destination تَصيرُهاit reaches them
And they lodged Hind in dwellings that had not been
theirs before then, save as a destination they would reach.
وَدارَتand turned رَحىthe millstone الأَبطالِof champions فيin حَومَةِthe thick الوَغىof battle
وَأَظهَرَand bared أَنيابَthe fangs الحُروبِof wars هَريرُهاtheir snarling
And the champions' millstone turned in the thick of battle,
and the wars' snarling bared their fangs.
وَهُمand they رَجَعواthey returned لِاِبنِto the son of المُعَكبَرِal-Muʿakbar ذَودَهُhis small camel herd
وَقَدand already كانَhad عَنهاfrom it قَدalready تَوَلّىturned away مُجيرُهاits protector
And they restored his small camel herd to Ibn al-Muʿakbar,
though its protector had already turned away from it.
وَهُمand they صَدَّقواthey fulfilled رُؤياthe dream بُرَيقَةَof Burayqah إِذwhen رَأَتshe saw
غَيابَةَa dark covering مَوتٍof death مُستَهَلّاًpouring forth مَطيرُهاits rain-bearing cloud
And they fulfilled Burayqah's dream, when she saw
a dark pall of death, its rain-cloud pouring forth.
فَكَذَّبَهاthen called her a liar مِنamong قَومِهاher people كُلُّevery خائِنٍtraitor
وَقَدand already جاءَهُمcame to them بِالحَقِّwith the truth عَنهُمabout them نَذيرُهاits warning herald
Then every traitor among her people called her a liar,
though its herald had come to them with the truth about them.
فَماthen nothing راعَهُمstartled them إِلّاexcept أَسِنَّةُthe spearheads مازِنٍof Mazin
يُديرُturns قَناهاtheir spear-shafts بِالأَكُفِّwith the hands مُديرُهاtheir wielder
Then nothing startled them but Mazin's spearheads,
their wielder turning their spear-shafts in his hands,
وَخَيلٌand horses تَنادىcalling out بِالمَناياwith deaths إِلَيهِمُtoward them
وَآسادُand lions غيلٍof the thicket لاnot يُبَلَّis healed عَقيرُهاtheir wounded prey
and horses crying out death to them,
and lions of the thicket, whose wounded prey never recovers.
