شَكَوناwe complained إِلَيكَto you الجَهدَthe hardship فيin السَنَةِthe year الَّتيthat
شَكَونا إِلَيكَ الجَهدَ في السَنَةِ الَّتي
أَقامَتset عَلىupon أَموالِناour wealth آفَةَthe scourge المَحلِthe drought
أَقامَت عَلى أَموالِنا آفَةَ المَحلِ
We complained to you of hardship in the year that
We complained to You of hardship during the year

فَلَمso did not يَبقَremain مِنof مالٍlivestock يَسومُgrazes لِأَهلِهِfor its owners

وَلا مَرتَعٌ في حَزمِ أَرضٍ وَلا سَهلِ
So no livestock remained to graze for its owners,
Leaving no property for a man to allot to his family,
nor any pasture on rugged land or plain,
Nor pasturage in a tract of land or plain.
سِواءَكَexcept you أَشكوI lament القَومَthe people ماwhat قَدalready أَصابَهُمbefell them
سِواءَكَ أَشكو القَومَ ما قَد أَصابَهُم
عَلىamid الجَهدِthe hardship وَالبَلوىand the ordeal الَّتيthat كُنتَyou were قَدalready تُبليyou inflict
عَلى الجَهدِ وَالبَلوى الَّتي كُنتَ قَد تُبلي
save you; I lament what has befallen the people,
To You I complain of people whom You have afflicted
amid hardship and the ordeal you had been inflicting.
