تُباري حَراجيجاً تَبورُ ضُفورُها
To you, Abu al-Ashbal, my mount journeyed,
To you, O father of cubs, my mare hastened,
keeping pace with gaunt she-camels whose braided girths no longer serve.
Racing against the howdahs, her saddlebags fluttering.

إِلَيكَ لَها رَوحاتُها وَبُكورُها
Her girth-loops have met above her flattened hump-crests;
Her forelocks met above the smooth earth,
toward you are her afternoon journeys and her dawn departures.
To you her galloping and early rising.

Our riding camels fight with their mouths in her defense
Our mounts defend her with their mouths
when their backs lie bare to those that alight.
Whenever her flanks are exposed in the fray.

You see every distinguished mare lower her shoes
when her saddle-frame is made to follow behind another saddle.
When the string of her saddlebag follows the saddlebags.

To a lion she journeyed with my saddle, and braved
To a lion my mare went with my saddle, risking
fierce, thick-necked lions, whose roaring nearly
Pastures where his roar almost deafens.

The earth shakes under him though intact
when it hears it—or tears its rocky hills loose.
When it hears him or his den is flashed open.

And I used to ask the postman, anxiously,
in alarm, while my soul inwardly feared
My soul dreading its conscience,

About events I feared might touch you
when the Turks' raiding force met the Muslims.
If the Turks met the Muslims with their raiding parties.

And you are a man among men: there is no tribe
You are a man in people with no tribe
you ally with whose champion does not grow mighty.
That allies with them but values its supporter.
