The Yemeni tribesmen have surely lied, to their misfortune—

With their Qahtan, their freeborn and their slaves.

They seek a clear right to the caliphate,

Its supports firm, its central pole tall.

    وَإِن عُدتُمُ فيها فَسَوفَ نُعيدُها

    So if you endure among us, you will assent to our rule;

And if you return to it, we shall repeat it.

There was surely a lesson in the house of al-Muhallab,

And their followers—only their fugitive remnant remained.

Ibn Ahwaz's sword drives them headlong in Sind,

And his horsemen are flames whose fuel is kindled.

Lions of battle from Tamim rose against them,

Swift is their coming to lap up blood.

By my life, they disparaged the caliphate when they rebelled,

And its devoted servant among Yemen, as he annihilates them.

Then nothing startled them but battalions that began

Trampling them until their mown-down slain were laid to sleep.

    وَمِن قَبلِهِم عادٌ عَصَت وَثَمودُها

    So they became like those who had rebelled before them;

And before them, ʿAd disobeyed, and Thamud along with it.

Mudar the Red accepts nothing but noble distinction

Above mankind; her forefathers surpass every forefather.

When one day the chiefs of Khindif grow angry,

And their brothers, Qays, clad in their iron,

You would think the earth's back was trembling,

And the solid mountains, the red among them and the black.

Whenever we pronounce a judgment in the lands,

Its courier speeds across the breadth of the two easts.

Ours are the sea and the land that lie side by side,

And all who dwell in them—none can overwhelm her.
