وَأَصلىand scorched بِنارٍwith a fire قَومَهُhis people فَتَصَلَّتِso they burned
وَأَصلى بِنارٍ قَومَهُ فَتَصَلَّتِ
The slave al-Ṭirimmāḥ has indeed torn away his veil,
and scorched his people with a fire, so they burned—
سَعيراًa blazing fire شَوَتroasted مِنهُمfrom among them وُجوهاًfaces كَأَنَّهاas though they were

وُجوهُ خَنازيرٍ عَلى النارِ مُلَّتِ
a blaze that roasted faces among them, as though they were
the faces of pigs roasted over the fire.
فَماso not أَنجَبَتbore noble offspring أُمَّthe mother of العَلافِيَّal-ʿAlāfī طَيِّءٌṬayyiʾ

وَلَكِن عَجوزٌ أَخبَثَت وَأَقَلَّتِ
So Ṭayyiʾ did not beget a noble mother for al-ʿAlāfī,
but an old woman who bore vile offspring, and few.

We found the collars of baseness allied to Ṭayyiʾ,
clinging to it wherever it passed the night and day.

sons of chaste women of noble Tamīm,
who bore them to the noblest fathers among men.

And but for fear that Ṭayyiʾ would be massacred,
it would never have prostrated itself to God or prayed.

Christians and Nabataeans, paying tribute,
rushing with it at a gallop whenever it is called for.

It made them drink deadly poison until they reeled,
and they met my spear, rigid, and it held firm.

The women of Ṭayyiʾ openly flaunt their shame,
and her secrets are the foulest when she conceals them.

She has a forehead like a pounding-stone, its rim growing damp,
when her jowls swell and rise high.

Do you recall the affair of al-Azd—you are not one of them—
and what Oman suffered at our hands, and how it was humbled?

We killed them until we wiped out their fugitives,
and their women were taken captive and made lawful to us.

You have forgotten a fierce day at Qindābīl,
a renowned day, when al-Azd’s slain were dragged across the plain.
