So ask Hawazin: among their nobles there is
Knowledge and a store of reports.

A people of noble rank, whose bodies look,
On Aʿwaj-bred steeds, like hunting hounds from Saluq.

Has outstripped you, O son of the donkey-driver.

How can you make excuses, after you have examined
A male calf of a she-camel hard in labor and shy of mating?

May God disgrace Banu Kulayb, for they
Neither betray nor keep faith with a neighbor.

They wake at the braying of their donkey,
And their eyes sleep, heedless of wrongs to avenge.

Truly, every man of Banu Kulayb has upon him
Baseness he has donned down to his fingernails.

Veiled in baseness, as though their faces
Had their brows smeared with a salve of tar.

Many a forefather of mine, O Jarir, is like
The moon of the Milky Way, or the lamp of day.

He inherited noble virtues, a great man from a great man,
Lavish in bounty on every day of boasting.

You find our horsemen, when you fasten halters,
Girt for every day of calamity.

And indeed, I have left all of Banu Kulayb
Deaf-headed, with their eyes gouged out.

And indeed, you have lost your father while seeking Darim,
Like one who strays seeking the road to Wabar.

He never finds his way, even if it is described to him—
Neither by a watering party's path nor a route away from water.

They said, 'Follow the sun; so head toward it,'
Yet the sun is far from travelers.

When he stumbled blindly through the sands, he was guided
By a maned hyena, a guide at every lair.
