they lived long, and each, at the pulpit's summit,
Who ruled, each ascending to the highest pulpit

Nothing equals your two hands or is better than they,
Nothing compares to your hands, better than them
where the seas' overflow has converged in your two hands.
Where they joined and the seas overflowed

The winds slackened before al-Walid when they went forth
The winds stopped blowing at Al-Walid
with him, while his right hand's outpouring never slackened.
When they raged with him, and the overflowing of his right hand did not cease

Whoever comes to al-Walid's hill and its warmth,
Who comes to Al-Walid's meadow and takes shelter in it
fearful because of an offense, shall not be harmed.
From fear of an injury that does no harm

the two pools of Abu al-Hakam, belonging to his stock,
The two basins of Abu Al-Hakam which were filled for him
and both brimming from the turbid Euphrates.
From the muddy Euphrates

لَم يَحقُنوها في السَقاءِ الأَوفَرِ
Indeed, those who rebelled against Ibn Affan
Those who rebelled against the son of Affan
did not contain it in the fullest waterskin.
Did not quench their thirst from the most abundant drink

صَبراً وَمَيتُ ضَريبَةٍ لَم يَصبُرِ
They were killed at every mountain pass and town,
They were killed in every pass and town
in captivity; one slain by a blow was not held for execution.
With patience, and the tax of those who did not show patience

And the people know that we are their lords,
And the people know that we are their masters
the day their pilgrims met at al-Mash'ar.
When their pilgrims met ours at Mash'ar

their sides raised by juniper poles.
Whose edges the poles of the litters rose over

They stand waiting behind our backs
until we move on with a cloud pouring torrents.
Until we turn away with a nose held high
