عَلىover المُتَرَدِّفاتِthe successive ridges بِكُلِّin every خَرقٍwilderness
نَحائِزُlong tracks كُلِّevery مَنتَجِرٍpassage (uncertain) مُنيرِclearly marked
Over the successive ridges in every wilderness,
On she-camels, with all sort of saddle cloth,
Run the long tracks of every clearly marked passage.
We vie to possess each shining and glorious rider.
فَماso not بَلَغَتthey reached بِناwith us إِلّاexcept جَريضاًgasping; near death
عَلىupon الأَعجازِthe rumps تُردِفُcarries behind كُلَّevery كورِcamel saddle
So they brought us through only at their last gasp,
They barely give us a chance.
Carrying every saddle behind upon their rumps.
All the bright stars follow behind their necks.
بَلَغنَthey arrived وَمُخُّهُنَّand their marrow مَعَwith السُلامىthe small foot-bones
بِكُلِّwith every نَجاءَswift she-camel صادِقَةِsteadfast in الضَريرِendurance
They arrived, their marrow in their small foot-bones,
They reached, along with the dark-skinned pretty women,
Each a swift she-camel of steadfast endurance.
Truthfully calling, every blind and sighted.
وَأَشلاءٍand remains لِناجِيَةٍof a fleet she-camel تَرَكناwe left
عَلَيهاupon her العاكِفاتِthe lingering ones مِنَamong النُسورِthe vultures
And the remains of a fleet she-camel we left behind,
And we left, for a wailing woman,
With vultures lingering over her.
On her, vultures hovering, screaming.
كَأَنَّas though رِكابَناour riding camels فيin كُلِّevery فَجٍّpass
إِذاwhen دَبَّcrept الكُحَيلُthe pitch مِنَfrom الغُرورِthe skin-folds
As though our riding camels in every pass,
As if our riders in every ravine,
When pitch seeped from their skin-folds,
When folly creeps, due to vanity,
نِعامٌostriches رائِحٌmoving at evening فيon يَومِa day of ريحٍwind
وَلَيسَتand they are not فيin أَخِشَّتِهاtheir nose-reins بَعيرِa pack-caravan
Were ostriches moving at evening on a windy day,
Are ostriches running on a windy day,
Yet, in their nose-reins, they were no pack-caravan.
With no she-camel in their midst.
وَلَكِنbut يَنتَجِعنَthey seek pasture بِناwith us فُراتاًthe Euphrates
وَنيلاًand the Nile يَطمُوانِboth rise عَلىabove البُحورِthe seas
But with us they seek the Euphrates,
But Euphrates and Nile gush for us,
And the Nile, both rising above the seas.
And surge into the seas.
هُماboth فيin راحَتَيكَyour two palms إِذاwhen تَلاقىconverged
عُبابُهُماtheir surging waters إِلىinto حَلَبٍa yield of milk غَزيرِabundant
Both lie in your palms, when there converge
Meeting each other in your care,
Their surging waters, yielding milk in plenty.
Their flood reaches plentiful Aleppo.
بِهِمthrough them ثَبَتَتstood firm رَحىthe mill of الإِسلامِIslam قَسراًby force
وَضَربٍand blows بِالمُهَنَّدَةِwith Indian-forged swords الذُكورِhard-tempered
Through them Islam's mill stood firm, through force,
Through them the millstone of Islam was firmly established,
And blows of hard-tempered Indian swords.
And spread, by the spears of the honorable men.

The sons of Marwan inherited it from him,
The Marwanids inherited it from them,
And from Uthman, after a great rift.
After a long absence since Uthman.
رَجاكَplaced hope in you المَشرِقانِthe East and West لِكُلِّfor every عانٍcaptive
وَأَرمَلَةٍand widow وَأَصحابُand the men of الثُغورِthe frontier posts
East and West look to you for every captive
The East and West appealed to you in every turmoil,
And widow; so do the men of the frontier posts.
As did the widows and people of the frontiers.
وَكُنتَand you had جَعَلتَlaid down لِلعُمّالِfor the officials عَهداًa covenant
وَفيهِand in it العاصِماتُthe safeguards مِنَagainst الفُجورِwrongdoing
You had laid down a covenant for the officials,
You had made a covenant with the governors,
And in it are safeguards against wrongdoing.
In it ways to protect from corruption.
فَمَنso whoever يَأخُذtakes hold بِحَبلِكَof your rope يَجلُdispels عَنهُfrom him

From whoever grasps your rope is banished
Whoever holds onto your rope, the white light of your eyes prevents,
The dimness of his eyes, by white radiance from you.
His eyes from unlawful sights.
أَميرَCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful وَأَنتَand you تَشفيheal
بِعَدلِwith the justice of يَدَيكَyour two hands أَدواءَthe ailments of الصُدورِhearts
Commander of the Faithful, you heal
O Commander of the Faithful, as you heal,
With your hands' justice, the ailments of hearts.
With the justice of your hands, the illnesses of hearts.
فَكَيفَthen what بِعامِلٍof an official يَسعىwho acts عَلَيناagainst us

Then what of an official who acts against us,
How can an agent, who comes demanding from us,
Demanding dirhams from us by the purseful?
Obliging us to pay dirhams in our abodes?
وَأَنّىand how بِالدَراهِمِto obtain dirhams وَهيَwhile they are مِنّاin relation to us

And how can we find dirhams, when they lie as far from us
Whence are dirhams for us, when we are,
As Sirius from one who raises both palms toward it?
Like one raising his hands for help to cross.
