    O you who ask me where bounty and generosity dwell,

    I have an answer when those seeking it arrive.

    This is he whose tread al-Batha knows,

    and the House knows him, as do the unconsecrated land and the sanctuary.

    هَذَا التَّقِي‌ُّ النَّقِي‌ُّ الطَّاهِرُ العَلَمُ

    This is the son of the best of all God's servants;

    this is the devout, the pure, the spotless, the beacon.

    صَلَّي‌ عَلَیهِ إلَهِي‌ مَا جَرَي‌ القَلَمُ

    This is he whose forefather is Ahmad, the Chosen;

    may my God bless him as long as the pen runs.

    If the corner knew who had come to kiss it,

    it would fall down to kiss what his foot had trodden.

    أَمْسَتْ بِنُورِ هُدَاهُ تَهْتَدِي‌ الاُمَمُ

    This is Ali, whose forefather is the Messenger of God;

    by the light of his guidance, the nations came to find their way.

    This is he whose uncle is Ja'far, the Flying One,

    and the slain Hamza, a lion—love of him is an oath.

    This is the son of Fatima, mistress of women,

    and the son of the designated successor, in whose sword is vengeance.

    When Quraysh sees him, its spokesman says:

    Generosity reaches its utmost in this man's noble deeds.

    Recognizing his palm, it almost grasps him—

    the corner of the Hatim—when he comes to touch it.

    العُرْبُ تَعْرِفُ مَنْ أنْكَرْتَ وَالعَجَمُ

    And your saying, "Who is this?" does him no harm;

    the Arabs know the man you disown, and so do the non-Arabs.

    His descent is traced to a summit of glory that

    the Arabs of Islam and the non-Arabs have failed to attain.

    He lowers his gaze in modesty; others lower theirs in awe of him,

    so he is addressed only when he smiles.

    The light of the dark night recedes before the light of his brow,

    as with the sun, darkness recedes before its radiance.

    In his palm is a bamboo cane, fragrant in scent

    from the hand of a majestic man with a proudly aquiline nose.

    لَوْلاَ التَّشَهُّدُ كَانَتْ لاَؤهُ نَعَمُ

    He never said "no," except in his profession of faith;

    without that profession, his "no" would have been "yes."

    طَابَتْ عَنَاصِرُهُ وَالخِيمُ وَالشِّيَمُ

    His shoot springs from the Messenger of God;

    noble are his origins, his nature, and his traits.

    حُلْوُ الشَّمَائِلِ تَحْلُو عِنْدَهُ نَعَمُ

    He bears people's burdens when they are weighed down;

    sweet in disposition, his "yes" is sweet.

    وَإنْ تَكَلَّمَ يَوْماً زَانَهُ الكَلِمُ

    If he speaks, he says what all of them desire;

    and if he speaks one day, his words adorn him.

    بِجَدِّهِ أنبِيَاءُ اللَهِ قَدْ خُتِمُوا

    This is the son of Fatima, if you do not know him;

    with his grandfather, the succession of God's prophets was sealed.

    جَرَي‌ بِذَاكَ لَهُ فِي‌ لَوْحِهِ القَلَمُ

    God favored him long ago and honored him;

    the Pen inscribed that for him upon His Tablet.

    He is one before whose grandfather the prophets' excellence bowed,

    and before whose community, for its excellence, the nations bowed.

    He embraced creation with kindness, and there receded

    from it blindness, destitution, and darkness.

    يُسْتَوْكَفَانِ وَلاَ يَعْرُوهُمَا عَدَمُ

    Both his hands are succor, their benefit reaching all;

    their showers are sought, and no want ever touches them.

    يَزِينُهُ خَصْلَتَانِ: الحِلْمُ وَالكَرَمُ

    Gentle in nature, his outbursts are not feared;

    two qualities adorn him: forbearance and generosity.

    He never breaks a promise; his inner nature is blessed.

    His courtyard is spacious; he is discerning when hard pressed.

    He is of a people: love of them is religion, and hatred of them

    is unbelief; nearness to them is deliverance and refuge.

    Through love of them, evil and affliction are warded off,

    and through it, more kindness and blessings are sought.

    Their mention takes precedence after the mention of God

    in every obligatory prayer, and with it the words are sealed.

    أوْ قِيلَ: مَنْ خَيْرُ أَهْلِ الارْضِ قِيلَ: هُمُ

    If the pious are counted, they are their leaders;

    or if asked, "Who are the best people on earth?" the answer is, "They."

    No generous man can reach their distant goal,

    nor can any people match them, however noble they are.

    They are rains of relief when a crisis closes in,

    and lions, the lions of al-Shara, when battle rages.

    Blame is barred from settling in their courtyard

    by a noble nature and hands lavish with bounty.

    سِيَّانِ ذَلِكَ إنْ أثْرَوْا وَإنْ عَدِمُوا

    Hardship never closes their outstretched hands;

    in this they are alike, whether wealthy or destitute.

    Which tribe bears no debt upon its neck

    for favors from this man's forebears or from him?

    فَالدِّينُ مِنْ بَيْتِ هَذَا نَالَهُ الاُمَمُ

    Whoever knows God knows this man's ancestry;

    for the nations received religion from this man's house.

    Their houses among Quraysh are sought for light

    amid calamities, and at judgment when they judge.

    For his grandfather, from the very rootstock of Quraysh,

    is Muhammad, and Ali after him is a beacon.

    والخَنْدَقَانِ وَيَومُ الفَتْحِ قَدْ عَلِمُوا

    Badr bears witness for him, and the ravine of Uhud;

    and the two trenches and the day of the Conquest have known him.

    And Khaybar and Hunayn both bear witness for him,

    and at Qurayda was a devastating, dust-darkened day.

    Stands in battle that rose high in every calamity,

    above the Companions—I did not conceal them as they did.
