أَعَينَيَّO my two eyes ماno بَعدَafter اِبنِson of موسىMusa ذَخيرَةٌreserve
فَجوداso pour freely, you two إِذاwhen أَنفَدتُماyou two have exhausted الماءَthe water (tears) بِالدَمِwith blood
O my eyes, after Ibn Musa there is nothing to keep in reserve;
My eyes, after Ibn Musa there is no treasure
so pour forth blood when you have exhausted your tears.
Like you two, generous when you shed blood instead of water,
وَهيجاand well up, you two إِذاwhen نامَsleeps الخَلِيُّthe carefree one وَأَسعِداand aid, you two
عَلَيهِfor him بِنَوحٍwith lamentation مِنكُماfrom you two كُلَّevery مَأتَمِmourning gathering
And well up when the carefree sleep, and aid
And passionate when the unwise sleep while you mourn him
every mourning gathering with your lament for him.
With wailing, wherever there is grief for him.
وَماand what لَكُماis with you two لاnot تَبكِيانِyou two weep وَقَدwhile already بَكَتhas wept
لَهُfor him كُلُّevery عَينٍeye مِنof فَصيحٍone with articulate speech وَأَعجَمِand one without speech
And why do you two not weep, when
Why do you not weep when all eyes have wept for him,
every eye, of the eloquent and the speechless, has wept for him?
Eloquent and inarticulate?
فَأَيُّso which فَتىًyoung man بَعدَafter اِبنِson of موسىMusa نُعِدُّهُshall we keep him ready
لِيَومِfor a day of لِقاءٍbattle أَوor حَمالَةِundertaking payment of مَغرَمِa financial liability
What youth, after Ibn Musa, shall we hold in readiness
After Ibn Musa, what young man do we consider
for a day of battle, or to shoulder a debt's burden?
For a day of meeting, or a passionate undertaking?
فَتىًa young man بَينَbetween صِدّيقِthe Truthful One النَبِيِّthe Prophet فُروعُهُhis lineage's branches
وَطَلحَةَand Talha مَحمودِpraised for الخَلائِقِcharacter traits خِضرِمِboundlessly generous
A youth whose lineage branches from the Prophet's Truthful One
A young man whose ancestry lies between the Prophet's bosom friend
and Talha, praised for his character, boundlessly generous.
And Talha, the praised one of all mankind, long-lived,
وَلَوand if شاءَhe wished إِذwhen وَلّىfled الكَتائِبُthe battalions حَولَهُaround him
تَعالىhe would have mounted عَلىupon باقيremaining العُلالَةِreserve vigor مِرجَمِa stone-flinging steed
And had he wished, when the battalions around him fled,
And if he had wished, when the armies rallied around him,
he could have mounted a stone-flinging steed with vigor still in reserve.
He would have triumphed over the rest of the deposed,
وَلَكِنand yet رَأىhe saw أَنَّthat الحَياةَlife ذَميمَةٌcontemptible
وَأَنَّand that المَناياfated deaths تَرتَقيclimb كُلَّevery سُلَّمِladder
But he saw that life was contemptible,
But he saw that life is worthless,
and that death climbs every ladder,
And that death climbs every ladder.
وَأَنَّand that فِرارَthe flight of المُسلِمينَthe Muslims خَزايَةٌa disgrace
وَأُحدوثَةٌand a tale تَنميspreads إِلىto كُلِّevery مَوسِمِseasonal gathering
and that the Muslims' flight was a disgrace,
He saw the Muslims’ flight was shameful
and a tale spreading to every seasonal gathering.
And scandalous, spreading in every season.
وَعِندَand with اِبنِson of موسىMusa السالِمِيَّal-Salimi كَأَنَّهُas though it were
عَتيقٌa noble hawk بِكَفَّيin both hands of قانِصٍa hunter مُتَقَرِّمِcraving meat
And with Ibn Musa was al-Salimi, as though it were
To Ibn Musa the Islamist it was as if
a noble hawk in the hands of a hunter craving meat,
He was an old man with calloused palms made rigid.
وَلاحِقَةُand lean الآطالِthe flanks جُردٌsleek مُتونُهاtheir backs
تَبُذُّoutstrip هَواديهاtheir necks يَدَيthe two hands of كُلِّevery مُلجِمِbridler
and lean-flanked steeds with sleek backs,
The chasing horses, their chests bared,
their necks outstripping every bridler's hands:
Gallop wildly, terrorizing every warrior,
عَناجيجُswift, long-necked steeds مِنfrom آلِthe stock of الصَريحِal-Sarih كَأَنَّماas though
يَخَلنَthey imagine اِلتِهابَthe blaze of الشَدِّhard galloping أَسلابَspoils مَغنَمِbooty won
fleet, long-necked horses of al-Sarih's stock, as though
Neighing steeds from the clan of As-Sarih, as if
they imagined the blaze of galloping was plunder to be won.
Their neighing ignited the intensity of battle, stirred the booty.
فَقالَthen he said لِمَنto whoever يَرجوhopes for الإِيابَthe return اِستَغِثseek rescue بِهاthrough them
وَكَرَّand charged back كَمَخضوبِlike one stained الذِراعَينِin both forelegs ضَيغَمِa lion
He told whoever hoped to return, 'Seek rescue in them,'
So he said to whoever hopes for success, seek refuge in them,
and charged back like a lion with blood-stained forelegs.
And attack, his arms dyed red, like a diving young camel.
بِسَيفِwith the sword of أَبيAbu (father of) بَكرٍBakr وَطَلحَةَand Talha يَختَليhe shears away
بِهِwith it حَلَقَthe rings of الماذِيِّfine chainmail عَنfrom كُلِّevery مِعصَمِwrist
With the sword of Abu Bakr and Talha, he sheared
With the swords of Abu Bakr and Talha he decapitates
the rings of fine chainmail from every wrist.
The throat of the transgressor, cutting off every support.
فَقُلso say لِعِتاقِto the thoroughbreds of الخَيلِthe horses تَمنَعthey should withhold ظُهورَهاtheir backs
فَقَدfor indeed غيلَwas treacherously slain عَنهاaway from them مَنthe one who يَقولُsays لَهاto them اِقدِمِadvance!
So tell the thoroughbred horses to withhold their backs,
Say to the emancipators of horses, restrain their chests,
for treacherously slain and taken from them is he who said, 'Advance
For the one who says to them “advance” is gone.
عَلىinto غَمَراتِthe engulfing depths of المَوتِdeath تَشكوcomplain عِتاقُهاits thoroughbreds
إِذاwhen ساوَرَتthey confront وَقعَthe blows of القَناthe lances وَالتَحَمحُمِand low neighing
into death's engulfing depths!' The thoroughbreds complain
At the overwhelming floods of death, their emancipators complain
when they confront spear-strokes and the rumble of neighs.
When the clash of spears and deep sighing begins.
يَجودُhe gives freely بِنَفسٍwith a life لاnot يُجادُis freely given بِمِثلِهاwith its like
إِذاwhen غَيَّرَchanged السيماthe insignia بِهِbecause of him كُلُّevery مُعلَمِmarked warrior
He freely gave a life whose like is never given,
He sacrifices a soul that cannot be equaled
when every marked warrior changed his insignia because of him.
If its mark changes him, as does every standard.
فَقَدfor indeed نَقَضَunraveled الأَيّامُthe days بَعدَafter مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
عَلىagainst القَومِthe people مِنof مِرّاتِهِمtheir strands of strength كُلَّevery مُبرَمِfirmly twisted strand
For after Muhammad, the days have unraveled
After Muhammad, the days have violated
every tightly twisted strand of the people's strength.
His people, from their treaties, every firm one.
