وَماand not عَنout of قِلىًhatred عاتَبتُI reproached بَكرَBakr اِبنَson of وائِلٍWa’il
وَلاnor عَنout of تَجَنّيunjust fault-finding الصارِمِthe severer of ties المُتَجَرِّمِthe imputer of guilt
It was not out of hatred that I reproached Bakr ibn Wa’il,
I do not reproach Bakr ibn Wa'il's tribe
nor from the unjust fault-finding of one who severs ties and imputes guilt.
Nor do I complain of the fierce, audacious swordsman.
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I أَولىmore entitled بِهِمto them مِنthan حَليفِهِمtheir ally

But I have a stronger claim upon them than their ally,
But I have a greater claim on them than their ally
when a loss befalls, or when there is gain.
When ruin threatens or at the dividing of spoil.
وَهَيَّجَنيand stirred me ضَنّيmy jealous care بِبَكرٍfor Bakr عَلىto الَّذيthat which

And my jealous care for Bakr stirred me to what
Envy against Bakr provoked me to what I said
I uttered; my private intentions toward Bakr are beyond suspicion.
Though my secret thought acquitted Bakr of blame.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمواthey knew أَنّيthat I أَناI myself الشاعِرُthe poet الَّذيwho

And they know that I am the poet who
They knew well that I am the poet who holds
safeguards every sacred right of all of Bakr.
Every sanctity of Bakr sacred.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِمَنto those whom عادَواthey opposed عَدُوٌّan enemy وَإِنَّنيand indeed I

And I am an enemy to those they oppose, and indeed I
I am a foe to those who show enmity to them
am grateful to them as long as my saliva keeps company with my mouth.
And I thank them while my fortunes side with theirs.
هُمُthey مَنَعونيprotected me إِذwhen زِيادٌZiyad يَكيدُنيplots against me

They protected me when Ziyad plotted against me
They defended me when Ziyad plotted against me
with blazing embers, aflame and fiercely burning.
With a flaming, fiercely burning firebrand.

And they gave their ancestral wealth in my defense and risked
They jeopardized themselves to protect me
their own lives when my humiliator was among them.
When there were those among them who urged my death.
أَتَرضىwould they be content? بَنوthe sons of شَيبانَShayban لِلَّهِto God دَرُّهُمtheir excellence
وَبَكرٌand Bakr جَميعاًaltogether كُلَّevery مُثرٍwealthy man وَمُعدَمِand destitute man
Would Banu Shayban—God bless them—be content,
Are you content, O tribe of Shayban, may you be rewarded,
and Bakr altogether, every rich man and pauper,
When all Bakr, both chiefs and commons, are destroyed?

with the Azd of Oman as brothers instead of their own people?
By the Azd of Oman, brothers to the exclusion of their tribe,
They have indeed claimed, in their judgment, that this is no humiliation.
They certainly imagined, in their view, something inconceivable.

For their brother, ‘Abd A‘la, built for them
Their sister's brother, Abd al-A'la, built a home for her
in the land of Heraclius—and lofty honor entails hardship—
In Heraclius' land, and al-A'la is of high-towering origin,

Lofty, of firmly constructed buildings, his glories are not laid low
by glorious deeds that neither bowed nor crumbled.
Nor demolished however the days assail.

They pledged your father in their stead, and did not stint
They have ransomed you, and excellent was their ransom;
in generosity toward the chosen one of their people.
None of their kin ransomed the Prophet more generously.
