It turns some of her bellowing back upon her nostrils—

her lead-rope, after a tug at the nose-peg.

    And many a she-camel shod—between her own foot-pad

and the pebbles—with a sandal, her blood oozing.

Each high-bred she-camel among them folded her womb,

empty of seed, its veils wrapped around it.

We came to you from a land whose winds die,

and in summer no guide is found who ventures into it:

of sand, the sand of al-Hawsh, before which perish

the evening and morning sweeps of a fierce north wind.

My she-camel fulfilled all I had required of her endurance,

for cares and far-off needs—the skittish one among them—

when she brought me to where converge

seekers of needs whose journey is long:

to the chosen one after the ruler, whose

bounty to the people fills the earth with its light.

And how many an ascent before reaching it I have walked,

and another descent where the camel is led!

And never did my soul urge me on a journey of its own

but its inward purpose directed me only to you.

And it had not drawn near before I told the riders,

'You will surely reach the sun's eye, where it sets.'

So when we arrived, God made my journey fruitful,

and a palm was opened for us, its seas overflowing.

We alighted with Ayyub, and saw no one like him,

when the earth's backs bristle against its people:

stronger in the strands of his rope for whoever seeks his shelter,

and longer—for the worst of ropes is the short one.

You appointed for us a guarantor of justice after you,

when a people's ruler fails to grant it justice.

Through him you straightened necks after you; thus turned

toward you the pointing fingers in the Muslims' hands.
