إِنّيindeed I لَأَستَحيِيI certainly feel ashamed وَإِنّيand indeed I لَفاخِرٌcertainly boastful
عَلىover طَيِّءٍTayy بِالأَقرَعَينِby the two Aqraʿs وَغالِبُand Ghalib
Indeed I feel shame, and indeed I boast
I am shy, yet I boast
over Tayy, on the strength of the two Aqraʿs and Ghalib.
of Tai over the two bald hills and its victor,
إِذاwhen رَفَعَlifted الطائِيُّthe man of Tayy عَينَيهِhis two eyes رَفعَةًa lifting
رَآنيhe saw me عَلىupon الجَوزاءِal-Jawzaʾ (a constellation) فَوقَabove الكَواكِبُthe stars
When a man of Tayy lifts his eyes upward,
When the man of Tai raises his eyes,
he sees me upon al-Jawzaʾ, above the stars.
he sees me above Al-Jawza, above the stars,
وَماand not طَيِّءٌTayy إِلّاexcept قَبائِلُtribes أُنزِلَتwere settled
إِلىto أَهلِthe people of عَينِAyn (spring) التَمرِal-Tamr (the dates) مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside
And Tayy is nothing but tribes settled
And Tai is none but tribes who descended
among the people of Ayn al-Tamr from every quarter.
to the people of palm tree spring from all sides,
فَهَذيso this حُدَيّاa challenge الناسِpeople فَخراًin boasting عَلىover أَبيthe father of
أَبيmy father غالِبٍGhalib مُحيِيreviver of الوَئيدِthose buried alive وَحاجِبِand Hajib
So here is a challenge to all people to outboast the father
So this is the pride of people over my father,
of my father Ghalib, reviver of the buried-alive, and Hajib.
my father Al-Ghālib, reviver of glory and eyebrow,
وَإِنand if أَناI لَمdid not أَجعَلI place بِأَعناقِupon the necks of طَيِّءٍTayy
مَواقِعَmarks of blows يَبقىremains عارُهاtheir shame غَيرَnot ذاهِبِpassing away
And if I do not place upon the necks of Tayy
And if I did not place in the necks of Tai
marks whose shame remains, never passing away,
positions whose shame remains not fleeting,
فَماthen not عَلِمَتshe knew طائيَّةٌa woman of Tayy مَنwho أَبٌa father لَهاto her
وَلَوand even if سَأَلَتshe asked عَنabout أَصلِهاher ancestry كُلَّevery ناسِبِgenealogist
then no woman of Tayy knows who her father is,
No woman of Tai would know who her father is,
even if she asks every genealogist about her ancestry.
even if she asked about her origin every genealogist,
