Indeed, He who raised the sky built for us

a house whose pillars are mightier and taller.

A house the Sovereign built for us; and whatever is built

by Heaven’s Judge can never be moved.

A house with Zurarah sitting, knees clasped, in its courtyard,

and Mujashiʿ, and Nahshal, father of horsemen.

They enter Mujashiʿ’s house; and when they sit with knees clasped,

they stand forth like towering mountains.

None like them sits with knees clasped in your house’s courtyard,

ever, when the noblest deeds are reckoned.

Because of their might, Kulayb has burrowed into its house,

a pen, beside which they seem like lice.

The spider has spread its woven web over you,

and through it the revealed Book has passed judgment against you.

Where are those through whom you rival Darim in glory?

Or whom do you place alongside Tuhayyah’s two forefathers?

They walk in rings of iron, as do

mangy camels, smeared all over with pitch.

And the protectors, when women ride one behind another,

    fearing enslavement, their camels unsaddled.

When swords are drawn, our women are protected

by a wild onslaught that sends forearms falling.

And many a crowned man, above whom flutter

the banners of kings, with a vast army at his command—

a king toward whom our hands drive the spears,

from whom we give their breasts a second draught and a first—

has died among our spearpoints, or felt the bite

of a keen sword, by whose gleam kings are slain.
