إِنif تُذعَرِare frightened الوَحشُthe wild beasts مِنby رَأسيmy head وَلِمَّتِهِand its locks
فَقَدfor indeed أَصيدُI hunt بِهاwith it الغِزلانَgazelles وَالبَقَراand wild cattle
If wild beasts take fright at my head and its locks,
yet I once hunted gazelles and wild cattle with them.
قُلتُI said لِمَوتىto dead men وَخوصٍand hollow-eyed camels إِذwhen وَقَعنَthey sank down بِهِمwith them
يَصرِفنَthey grind their teeth جَهداًfrom exhaustion وَلَمand had not تَستَطعِمِtasted الجِرَراcud
I said to dead-tired men and hollow-eyed camels, as they sank beneath them,
grinding their teeth in exhaustion, having tasted no cud:
إِنَّindeed النَدىbounty وَيَدَand the hand of العَبّاسِal-Abbas فَاِرتَحِلواso journey on
مِثلُlike الفُراتِthe Euphrates إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle مَوجُهُits waves زَخَراsurged
Truly, bounty and the hand of al-Abbas—journey on!—
are like the Euphrates when its waves surge high.
إِنif تَبلُغوهُyou reach him تَكونواyou will be مِثلَlike مُنتَجِعٍone seeking pasture
غَيثاًrain-fed pasture يَمُجُّspouts forth ثَآهُits damp earth الماءَwater وَالزَهَراand flowers
If you reach him, you will be like one seeking
a rain-fed pasture whose damp earth spouts water and flowers.
إِلَيكَtoward you أُرحِلَتِwere fitted for travel الأَحقابُthe rear girths وَاِختَلَطَتand became entangled
بِهاwith them الغُروضُthe belly-girths وَلاقىand encountered الأَعيُنُthe eyes السَهَراsleeplessness
To reach you, the rear girths were fitted, and tangled
with them were the belly-girths, while eyes met sleeplessness.
وَماand not جَلَونَthey freed لَناfor us عَيناًan eye فَنُطعِمَهاso we might feed it
بِالنَومِwith sleep إِلّاexcept مَعَat الإِصباحِdaybreak إِذwhen حَشَراit gathered us in
And they freed no eye of ours for us to feed
with sleep, save at daybreak, when it gathered us in;
إِذwhen وَقَعَتthey settled كَوُقوعِlike the alighting of الطَيرِbirds وَاِنجَدَلَتand sprawled
رُكبانُهاtheir riders حينَwhen لاقىmet الأَزرُعُthe forelegs القَصَراthe neck-bases
when they settled like alighting birds, and down sprawled
their riders, when forelegs met neck-bases,
مِثلَlike الجَراثيمِearthen mounds مَوتىdead men حينَwhen حَلَّdescended بِهِمupon them
طولُthe length of السُرىnight travel رَكِبواthey mounted أَعضادَهاtheir upper forelegs اليُسُراthe left ones
like earthen mounds, like dead men, when they were overcome
by long night travel; they lay across the camels’ left upper forelegs.
إِنَّindeed أَباAbu (father of) الحارِثِal-Harith العَبّاسِal-Abbas نائِلُهُhis bounty
مِثلُlike السِماكِal-Simak (the star) الَّذيwhich لاnever يُخلِفُfails to bring المَطَراrain
Truly, Abu al-Harith, al-Abbas—his bounty
is like al-Simak, which never fails to bring rain.
يَداهُhis two hands هَذيthis one حَياًlife-giving rain لِلناسِfor the people يَعصِمُهُمit protects them
وَيَجعَلُand places اللَهُGod فيin الأُخرىthe other لَهُfor him الظَفَراvictory
His two hands: this one is life-giving rain that protects people,
and in the other God places victory for him.
ياO أَكرَمَnoblest of الناسِpeople إِذwhen هَزّواthey brandish عَوالِيَهُمtheir spear-points
وَأَطيَبَand sweetest of الناسِpeople عِندَat الخُبرِthe test مُعتَصَراin extracted essence
O noblest of men when they brandish their spear-points,
and sweetest of men in essence when put to the test!
إِنّيindeed I سَمِعتُhave heard بِجَيشٍof an army أَنتَyou قائِدُهُits commander
وَوَقعَةٍand a battle رَفَعَتexalted أَيّامُهاits days مُضَراMudar
Indeed, I have heard of an army with you as its commander,
and a battle whose days raised Mudar high.
لَمّاwhen اِلتَقىclashed الناسُthe men يَومَon the day of البَأسِbattle كُنتَyou were لَهُمfor them
ضَوءًa light وَمِردىand a battering stone حُروبٍof wars يَهدِمُthat shatters الحَجَراstone
When men clashed on the day of battle, you were to them
a light, and a battering stone of war that shatters rock.
وَأَنتَand you وَالناسُas the men يَومَon the day of البَأسِbattle قَدindeed عَلِمواthey have learned
كَالنارِlike fire حينَwhen أَطارَsent flying الجاحِمُthe fire-kindler الشَرَراthe sparks
And you—as men have learned on the day of battle—
are like fire when the kindler sends sparks flying.
