If Qays has begun twisting its heads
If Qais turn their backs in the morning
Against me, its angry men shall surely grow more abased.
My anger towards them will surely grow
فَإِنّيfor I لَرامٍsurely shooting at قَيسَQays عَيلانَAylan رَميَةًa shot
وَإِنand even if كانَwere ليfor me نَقصاًa discredit شَديداًgrievous سِبابُهاreviling it
For I shall surely let fly a shot at Qays Aylan,
For I am set on attacking Qais with arrows
Even if reviling it brings me grievous discredit.
Though they bitterly assail me with insults
فَقولاso tell, you two لِقَيسٍto Qays قَيسِQays عَيلانَAylan تَجتَنِبshould avoid
بُحوريmy seas إِذاwhen طَمَّتoverflow وَعَبَّand surges عُبابُهاtheir billowing flood
So, you two, tell Qays—Qays Aylan—to avoid
Say to Qais, Qais of 'Ailan, avoid
My seas when they overflow and their billows surge.
My seas when the waves swell and surge
لَناours is حَومُthe heart of بَحريthe two seas of خِندِفٍKhindif قَدindeed حَمَتhas guarded بِهِwith it

Ours is the heart of Khindif's two seas, guarded
We have a roaring sea at Khindif
By their tumult against all whom the sky overshadows.
Which rages when the heavens pour
لَناours are حَجَراthe two stones of البَيتِthe House اللَذانِthe two that أَمامَهُbefore it

Ours are the House's two stones that stand before it,
We have two rocks at the House
And its direction of prayer from every quarter, and its door.
And its direction of prayer from all quarters
أَلَمdid ... not? يَأتِcome مِنّاfrom us رَبُّthe chief of كُلِّevery قَبيلَةٍtribe
بِحَيثُwhere جِمارُthe stone-heaps of القَومِthe people يُلقىare cast حِصابُهاtheir pebbles
Has not the chief of every tribe come from us,
Did not the Lord of each tribe come from us?
Where pebbles are cast at the people's stone-heaps?
When the tribe's protector is pelted with pebbles
وَإِنَّand indeed لَناwe have شَهباءَa gray host يَبرُقُflash بَيضُهاits helmets

And ours indeed is a gray host whose helmets flash,
We have a Shihab whose whiteness flashes
When its eagle-banner flutters above us one day.
When its vultures flutter over us one day

You see people, some hastening toward us and others fleeing,
You see people fleeing towards us
When its fighting sweeps through the two tribes one day.
When it brandishes its wings around the quarters
تَرىyou see كُلِّevery بَيتٍhouse تابِعاًsubject لِبِيوتِناto our houses

You see every house subject to our houses,
You see every house dependent on our houses
When their pavilions are pitched at the two Abtahs.
When their domes are struck on both sides
إِذاwhen لَبِسَتputs on قَيسٌQays ثِياباًgarments سَمِعتَهاyou hear them

When Qays puts on garments, you hear them;
When Qais wear clothes, you hear them
Its garments glorify God at the baseness of the skins.
Glorifying from the coarseness of their clothes
لَقَدindeed حَمَلَتhas borne عَنon behalf of قَيسِQays عَيلانَAylan عامِرٌAmir

Amir has indeed borne, on behalf of Qays Aylan,
Amer took from Qais of 'Ailan
Disgraces that its Kilab clan had amassed.
Possessions their dogs had collected
لَئِنif indeed حَومَتيmy battle's heart هابَتhas feared مَعَدٌّMaadd خِياضَهاwading into it

If Maadd has feared wading into my battle's heart,
If my seas frighten Ma'add's pastures
Indeed, Luqman son of Ad used to fear it.
Indeed Luqman ibn 'Ad used to fear them
لَقَدindeed كانَwas فيin شُغلٍpreoccupation أَبوكَyour father عَنِaway from العُلىglory

ضُروعُthe udders of الخَلاياmilch-camels صَرُّهاbinding them وَاِحتِلابُهاand milking them
Your father was indeed kept busy, away from glory:
Your father was busy with pregnant she-camels
The udders of milch-camels—binding them and milking them.
Their udders swelling and being milked
وَهَلand are ...? أَنتَyou إِلّاanything but عَبدُa slave to وَطبٍa milk-skin وَعُلبَةٍand a bowl

And are you anything but a slave to a milk-skin and a bowl,
Are you anything but a slave of Watb and 'Ulbah
Moaning whenever the old she-camels' male calves moan?
Who bleats when the prophets bleat their udders?
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat الأَرضَthe earth أَصبَحَhas begun يَشتَكيcomplains
إِلىto اللَهِGod لُؤمَthe baseness of اِبنَيthe two sons of دُخانٍDukhan تُرابُهاits dust
Have you not seen that the earth's dust has begun to complain
Have you not seen the land complain
To God of the baseness of Dukhan's two sons?
To Allah of the foul dust of Dukhan's sons?
جَعَلتُI set لِقَيسٍfor Qays لَعنَةًa curse نَزَلَتdescended بِهِمupon them
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod لَنwill not يَرتَدَّturn back عَنهُمfrom them عَذابُهاits torment
I have laid on Qays a curse that descended upon them
I made a curse from Allah descend upon Qais
From God; its torment will not turn away from them.
Its torment will not leave them
