If I knew the days would return to us,

I would weep for the generous hosts of Mujāshiʿ.

I wept for the people with whom fell

the pillars of a glory once mighty in its largesse.

When al-ʿAjʿāj weeps, he stirs a tear

in a grieving man's eyes—what he mourns will not return.

So if I weep for my people, O Nawār, it is because

I see their two mosques, bereft of them, like barren wastes,

both empty after the forbearance and rashness within them,

and after the surging flood of generosity, rushing in waves.

So now I find my dwellings all but overtaken,

where the torrent of the gushing ravines has run its course.

Yet among us, among our surviving mature men,

are healers of rifts and dreadful, shattering calamities.

As though their cloaks lay upon Rudaynī spears,

    held in long-fingered hands.

Whenever I say, 'This last stretch of night has passed,'

a black one returns, its shanks pitch-dark.

And how many a young man we left at al-Khuraybah,

noble, and a sword that cuts through what it strikes,

and a great bowl whose dependents were orphans,

and a full-length coat of mail covering the fingertips,

and a wide-mouthed filly whose rein was lost,

though once it had been kept safe for her, never lost.
