رَأَيتُ العَذارى قَد تَكَرَّهنَ مَجلِسي

رَأَيتُ العَذارى قَد تَكَرَّهنَ مَجلِسي

وَقُلنَ تَوَلّى عَنكَ كُلَّ شَبابِ

وَقُلنَ تَوَلّى عَنكَ كُلَّ شَبابِ

I saw that the maidens had come to dislike my company,

I saw the girls have come to dislike my company

And they said, “All youth has left you.”

And say, "All the youth has turned away from you."

يَنُرنَ إِذا هازَلتُهُنَّ وَرُبَّما

يَنُرنَ إِذا هازَلتُهُنَّ وَرُبَّما

أَراهُنَّ في الإِثآرِ غَيرَ نَوابي

أَراهُنَّ في الإِثآرِ غَيرَ نَوابي

They recoil when I jest with them, and sometimes

They frown when I jest with them, though sometimes

I see them unflinching in taking revenge.

I see them moved despite themselves to smile.

عَتَبنَ عَلى فَقدِ الشَبابِ الَّذي مَضى

عَتَبنَ عَلى فَقدِ الشَبابِ الَّذي مَضى

فَقُلتُ لَهُنَّ لا تَحينَ عِتابِ

فَقُلتُ لَهُنَّ لا تَحينَ عِتابِ

They reproached me for the loss of youth that had passed,

They chide me for the loss of youth now past,

So I said to them, “This is no time for reproach.”

And I say to them, "Reproach me not therefor."
