وَجَدتُكَ حينَ تُنسَبُ في تَميمٍ

وَجَدتُكَ حينَ تُنسَبُ في تَميمٍ

شُعاعِيّاً وَلَستَ مِنَ الصَميمِ

شُعاعِيّاً وَلَستَ مِنَ الصَميمِ

I found you, when your descent is traced among Tamim,

I found you attributed to Tamim,

a descendant of Shuʿāʿah, not of the true stock.

Though you are not genuine.

تُرَدُّ إِلى شُعاعَةَ حينَ يَنمي

تُرَدُّ إِلى شُعاعَةَ حينَ يَنمي

وَلا يَنمى إِلى حَسَبٍ كَريمِ

وَلا يَنمى إِلى حَسَبٍ كَريمِ

You are traced back to Shuʿāʿah when ancestry is reckoned,

You are sent back to Sho'aba when it grows,

and he is not traced to a noble lineage.

Yet it grows not into noble lineage.
