نَدِمتُI regretted نَدامَةَwith the remorse of الكُسَعِيِّal-Kusa‘i لَمّاwhen
غَدَتbecame مِنّيfrom me مُطَلَّقَةٌdivorced نَوارُNawar
I felt al-Kusa‘i’s remorse when
Nawar was divorced from me.
وَكانَتand she was جَنَّتيmy paradise فَخَرَجتُthen I departed مِنهاfrom it
كَآدَمَlike Adam حينَwhen لَجَّgrew relentless بِهاwithin it الضِرارُstrife
And she had been my paradise; then I left it,
Like Adam, when strife raged within it.
وَكُنتُand I was كَفاقِئٍlike one gouging out عَينَيهِhis two eyes عَمداًdeliberately
فَأَصبَحَso he became ماnot يُضيءُshines لَهُfor him النَهارُdaylight
And I was like one who deliberately gouged out both his eyes,
So daylight no longer shone for him.
وَلاand not يوفيdoes justice بِحُبِّto love for نَوارَNawar عِنديfor me
وَلاnor كَلَفيmy passion بِهاfor her إِلّاexcept اِنتِحارُsuicide
And nothing can do justice to my love for Nawar,
Nor to my passion for her, save suicide.
وَلَوand if رَضِيَتwere content يَدايَmy two hands بِهاwith her وَقَرَّتand she remained
لَكانَthen would have been لَهاfor her عَلىover القَدَرِfate الخِيارُthe choice
And if my hands had been content with her, and she had stayed,
She would have had the choice over fate.
وَماand not فارَقتُهاI parted from her شِبَعاًout of satiety وَلَكِنand yet
رَأَيتُI saw الدَهرَTime يَأخُذُtakes ماwhat يُعارُis lent
And I did not leave her because I had had my fill, but
I saw Time reclaim what is lent.
