He keeps driving passersby away from it, as though he were

a crow upon its heaps of dug earth, not one-eyed.

Did you water them while the bough swayed in the dew,

as though carpets of ʿAbqar lay along its two sides?

Then when we returned in summer for what you had promised,

you refused; it was an excuse and an evasion.

Then, when we came to water and the herd stood arrayed

at the trough, they demanded an outrageous price for drinking.

They said: Surely al-Hudhayl's grave is their way to water.

So I told them: You have not brought the matter to a fitting end.

Shall they drink the spoils of a man whose face

shone bright when a base man's countenance darkened?

You lie! By the signs of guidance, it shall not be tasted

by my milk-camels, though evening finds them lean, due for their fifth-day watering.

I took offense on his behalf, sword in hand, when I saw them

battering the unguarded wells with their forefeet.

It shatters the milk-camels' hocks, as though it were

a ghada-wood firebrand you fed until it blazed.

Is a man not a guest when his clan is away?

And had such treatment been imposed on him alive, he would surely have protested.

Nobly she bore him—from Taghlib, daughter of Wāʾil—

a chaste woman, to a radiant lord of Rabīʿah.

Who, then, will tell the young men of Taghlib that I

hamstrung camels at al-Hudhayl's grave, so that he might be remembered?

And we departed with others they had not watered, while there knelt

beside the trough some full-grown camels, never to be roused again.

They saw a freeborn defender, and his sword sent flying

their foremost from the trough, and they fled in alarm.

And they spent the night by the water's main body, their lodging

toward Dhāt Rijl, like bareheaded mourning women.

He keeps them penned on either side of Sufayr, fearing

the protected pasture's weaklings might hamstring them.
