يُمَلِّكُهُgrants him possession of خَزائِنَthe treasuries كُلَّevery أَرضٍland
وَلَمand not أَكُI was يائِساًdespairing مِنof أَنthat تُدالاyou would be granted victory
He grants him possession of the treasuries of every land;
nor had I despaired that victory would be yours.
فَأَصبَحَso it became غَيرَnot مُغتَصَبٍusurped بِظُلمٍthrough injustice
تُراثَthe inheritance أَبيكَof your father حينَwhen إِلَيكَto you آلاit passed
Thus it became yours, without unjust seizure—
your father's inheritance, when it passed to you.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you قَدcertainly نُصِرتَwere granted victory أَعَزَّthe mightiest نَصرٍvictory
عَلىover الحَجّاجِal-Hajjaj إِذwhen بَعَثَhe sent البِغالاthe mules
Indeed, you were granted the mightiest victory
over al-Hajjaj, when he sent the mules,
مُفَصَّصَةًjewel-studded تُقَرِّبُcantering بِالدَواهيwith calamities
وَناكِثَةًand oath-breaking تُريدُseeking لَكَfor you الزِيالاremoval
jewel-studded, cantering with calamities,
and oath-breaking, seeking your removal.
فَقالَthen said اللَهُGod إِنَّكَindeed you أَنتَyou yourself أَعلىhigher
مِنَthan المُتَلِمِّسينَthose seeking لَكَfor you الخِبالاruin
Then God said, 'Indeed, you yourself are higher
than those who seek your ruin.'
فَأَعطاكَso He gave you الخِلافَةَthe caliphate غَيرَwithout غَصبٍusurpation
وَلَمand not تَركَبyou rode لِتَغصِبَهاto usurp it قِبالاa sandal-strap's length
So He gave you the caliphate without usurpation,
nor did you ride a sandal-strap's length to seize it.
فَلَمّاthen when أَنthat وَليتَyou assumed الأَمرُcommand سَدَّتspun
يَداكَyour two hands مُمَرَّةًtightly twisted لَهُمُfor them طِوالاlong
Then, when you assumed command, there were spun
by your hands—tightly twisted and long for them—
حِبالَropes جَماعَةٍof unity وَحِبالَand ropes مُلكٍof sovereignty
تَرىyou see لَهُمُfor them رَواسيهاtheir firm anchors ثِقالاheavy
ropes of unity and ropes of sovereignty,
whose firm anchors you see weighing heavy for them.
جَعَلتَyou appointed لَهُمfor them وَراءَكَafter you فَاِطمَأَنّواso they felt secure
مَكانَin place of البَدرِthe full moon إِذwhen هَلَكواthey faced ruin هِلالاa crescent moon
You appointed for them after you—and they felt secure—
a crescent in the full moon's place when they faced ruin:
وَلِيَّthe heir العَهدِof the succession covenant مِنfrom أَبَوَيكَboth your parents فيهِin him
خَلائِقَvirtues قَدcertainly كَمَلنَhave become perfect لَهُfor him كَمالاcompletely
the heir apparent, born of both your parents, in whom
virtues have attained complete perfection:
تُقىًpiety وَضَمانَةًand a guarantee لِلناسِfor the people عَدلاًjustice
وَأَكثَرَand the greatest مَنof those يُلاثَrecourse is had بِهِto him نَوالاin bounty
piety, and a guarantee of justice for the people;
and he is the most generous of all to whom men turn.
فَزادَso may He increase الناكِثينَthe oath-breakers اللَهَGod رَغماًin humiliation
وَلاand may He not أَرضىsatisfy المَعاطِسَthe noses وَالسِبالاand the mustaches
So may God increase the oath-breakers' humiliation,
and never grant satisfaction to their noses and mustaches.
فَكانَso were الناكِثونَthe oath-breakers وَماand what أَرادواthey intended
كَراعيlike a shepherd of الضَأنَthe sheep إِذwhen نَصَبَhe erected الخِيالاa scarecrow
So the oath-breakers and their designs were
like a shepherd of sheep when he erected a scarecrow
وَراءَbehind سَوادِهاtheir dark mass يُخشىfear is felt عَلَيهاfor them

behind their dark mass, out of fear for them,
to protect them—yet it availed not a sandal-strap's worth.
فَأَصبَحَso became كَعبُكَyour standing الأَعلىthe highest وَأَضحَواand they became

هَباءَdust الريحِof the wind يَتَّبِعُfollowing الشَمالاthe north wind
Thus your standing rose highest, while they became
dust in the wind, following the north wind.
أَلَستَare you not اِبنَthe son of الأَئِمَّةِthe leaders مِنof قُرَيشٍQuraysh
وَحَسبُكَand sufficient for you فارِسُthe rider الغَبراءِof al-Ghabra خالاas a maternal uncle
Are you not the son of the leaders of Quraysh?
And the rider of al-Ghabra suffices as your maternal uncle.
