    God bless Yarbūʿ! Have they still no

    Firmness of purpose concerning the man slain by Ibn Khāzim?

    Ḥarām walked about at al-Baqīʿ as though they were

    Pregnant women, with Sālim’s blood upon their garments.

    If you are in a land where you fear death,

    Then press on as resolutely as Sālim al-Ghudānī did.

    He freely embraced his death in pursuit of blood-vengeance,

    So he died nobly, averse to reproach.

    يُناجي ضَميراً مُستَدَفِّ العَزائِمِ

    His reputation’s robes were free of indecency’s stain;

    He communed with his conscience, its resolves firmly set.

    When he resolved, he accomplished his intent, pressing on

    Through terror, ever scaling the mountain passes of mighty ordeals.

    And when he saw the authorities would not give him justice,

    He settled it before them with a bright, keen sword.

    وَلَيسَ أَخو الوِترِ الغَشومِ بِنائِمِ

    He did not wait to see the consequences, nor did he sleep;

    And one with a cruel blood-wrong to avenge is no sleeper.
