لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed كانَwas اِبنُson of ثَورٍThawr لِنَهشَلٍto Nahshal
غَروراًa deceiver كَماjust as غَرَّdeceived السَليمَthe snake-bitten man تَمائِمُهhis amulets
By my life, Ibn Thawr was indeed to Nahshal
By my life, Ibn Thawr has certainly made the Bani Nahshal arrogant,
A deceiver, as a snake-bitten man's amulets deceive him.
Just as ornaments make the bride vain,
فَدَلّاهُمُso he lowered them حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَذَبذَبواthey swayed
بِمَهواةِat the chasm of نيقٍa mountain peak أَسلَمَتهُمabandoned them سَلالِمُهhis ladders
So he lowered them until, when they hung swaying,
So he led them on until when they wavered,
Over a mountain peak's chasm, his ladders abandoned them.
At the pit of death, its ladders made them fall.
فَأَصبَحَso became مَنwhoever تَحميprotects رُمَيلَةُRumaylah وَاِبنُهاand her son
مُباحاًlaid open حِماهُhis sanctuary مُستَحَلّاًtreated as violable مَحارِمُهhis sacred bounds
Thus whoever Rumaylah and her son protect was left
And so he who protects Umaylah and her son,
With his sanctuary laid open and his sacred bounds made violable.
Became permitted, though forbidden his sanctities.
وَمِثلُكَand one like you قَدalready أَبطَرتُهُI confounded him قَدرَto the extent of ذَرعِهِhis endurance
إِذاwhen نَظَرَwatched الأَقوامُthe tribes كَيفَhow أُراجِمُهI pelt him
And I have confounded one like you to the limit of his endurance,
And the like of you, I have sized up your worth,
When the tribes watched how I pelted him.
When men look how I pelt you with stones.
فَمَنso whoever يَزدَجِرtakes omens from طَيرَbirds of اليَمينِthe right فَإِنَّماthen only

So whoever takes omens from birds on the right—only
So who will drive away the bird of ill omen? For verily
Ill-omened birds have flown for Yazid ibn Mas‘ud.
Misfortunes befell the son of Mas'ud and increased his woes,
تَسَمَّعlisten closely وَأَنصِتand listen in silence ياO يَزيدُYazid مَقالَتيmy words
وَهَلand will ...? أَنتَyou إِنif أَفهَمتُكَI make you understand الحَقَّthe truth فاهِمُهunderstanding it
Listen closely and attend in silence, Yazid, to my words;
Listen and pay heed, O Yazeed, to my speech,
And if I explain the truth to you, will you understand it?
And will you, if I make the truth clear to you, understand?
أُنَبِّئكَI tell you ماwhat قَدalready يَعلَمُknow الناسُthe people كُلُّهُمall of them
وَماand not جاهِلٌone ignorant of شَيئاًa thing كَمَنlike one who هُوَhe عالِمُهknowing it
I tell you what all people already know,
I will inform you what all the people know,
And one ignorant of a thing is not like one who knows it.
And nothing is unknown to the knowledgeable.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنّاthat we نَحنُwe ourselves أَفضَلُbetter مِنكُمُthan you
قَديماًof old كَماjust as خَيرُthe best of الجَناحِthe wing قَوادِمُهits foremost flight feathers
Have you not seen that we ourselves have been superior to you,
Do you not see that we are superior to you,
From ancient times, as a wing's best feathers are its foremost?
As the best of wings are the first to arrive?
وَماand not زالَceased بانيthe builder of العِزِّglory مِنّاfrom among us وَبَيتُهُand his house

وَفيand among الناسِthe people بانيa builder of بَيتِa house of عِزٍّglory وَهادِمُهand its destroyer
And the builder of glory and his house have always been among us;
And the builder of honor has always been from us,
And among people are those who build a house of glory and those who destroy it.
And among men is the builder and demolisher of the house of honor.

Long ago we inherited it, in the days of Tubba‘,
From ancient times we inherited it in Tubba's era,
Its columns tall, its supports strong.
Its pillars lofty, its supports firm.
وَكَمand how many مِنof أَسيرٍa captive قَدalready فَكَكناwe freed وَمِنand of دَمٍa blood-debt

And how many a captive we have freed, how many a blood-debt
And how many prisoners have we ransomed and how much blood,
We have shouldered when its debtor groaned beneath the burden!
Have we taken on when the debtor was heavily burdened?
بَنيO sons of نَهشَلٍNahshal لَنwill not تُدرِكواyou reach بِسِبابِكُمwith your insults
نَوافِذَthe piercing passages of قَوليmy speech حَيثُwhere غَبَّتsubsided عَوارِمُهits fierce assaults
O sons of Nahshal, with your insults you will never match
O Bani Nahshal, your insults will not reach,
My piercing words, even where their fierce assaults have subsided.
The outlets of my words wherever its dams have vented.
مَتىwhenever تَكُyou are ضَيفَa guest of النَهشَلِيَّthe Nahshali إِذاwhen شَتاhe winters

Whenever you are the Nahshali's guest in winter,
When are you the guest of the Nahshali, you will find, if he so wishes,
You will find his guest-bowl scantily filled, his food foul.
Scant his generosity, paltry his foods.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَعلَماyou two know ياO اِبنَيtwo sons of رِقاشٍRiqash بِأَنَّنيthat I

Have you two not learned, sons of Riqash, that I,
Do you not know, O sons of Riqaash, that I,
When one like you chooses war with me, make no peace with him?
When my war chooses the likes of you, do not befriend him?
