Bishr attained his heart’s desire when he set out in the morning,
With ʿAbda, the utmost of wishes—he, Ibn Shughāf.
فَياso, oh لَيتَهُwould that he لاقىhad met شَياطينَthe devils of مُحرِزٍMuḥriz
وَمِثلَهُمُand their like مِنfrom نَهشَلٍNahshal وَمَنافِand Manāf
Oh, would that he had met the devils of Muḥriz,
And their like from Nahshal and Manāf,
بِحَيثُwhere اِنحَنىcurved أَنفُthe nose of الصَليبِal-Ṣalīb وَأَعرَضَتand loomed
مَخارِمُmountain passes تَحتَbeneath اللَيلِthe night ذاتُhaving نِجافِridges
Where al-Ṣalīb’s nose curved, and there loomed
Mountain passes beneath the night, with ridges.
