As for Quraysh, Abu Hafs, it has indeed been bereft

Of valor and rain in al-Sham, when it parted from you.

Indeed, the widows and orphans, when brought to ruin,

And the horses, when routed, weep for Umar.

Never has battle lost the like of Abu Hafs,

Nor a seeker of kindness when he falls into need.

How many horsemen cried out, when they caught up

With the cavalry, in your name, until they were fed victory!

You, sons of Taym, and others too have indeed been bereaved,

Amid calamities, of the two finest men of Mudar,

And the noblest pair, when their family branches are counted,

And the readiest to lift their dependent when he stumbles.

So weep—may you be bereaved!—for Abu Hafs and his companion,

Abu Muadh, when its downpour blazed.

War, when it conceived, reached its full term

Through him, when it bore him, the piebald male.

How many a coward, amid the fray, you drew

Into combat—without you, he would not have stood firm.

Among them were days of true valor in which you were tested:

The days of Fars, and the days of Hajar.

O people, do not weep for anyone

After the man who met his fate at Dumayr.

Of his two hands, one was a sword that offered refuge

From the enemy; the other, rain that made trees grow.

The horses ask, amid the fray, when they close in,

And the suppliants at people's cauldrons and hearthstones:

Who will slay hunger after the martyr's son, and who

Will slay with the sword the clan's ram when he charges back?
