And many a woman who spoke to me—her arrows had not struck me—
She said my arrows did not wound her,
Her shafts struck me in the black core of my heart.
Yet upon my dark heart her darts were hurled.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَرامٍsurely shooting رَميَةًa shot قِبَلَtoward الَّتيthe woman whom

And I shall surely loose a shot toward the woman
Though toward her who hurt me I am still inclined,
Whom perhaps I shall win, even if she is hard for me to reach.
Hoping though she pained me I'll win her.

Ah, would that my share from ʿUlayya were this:
Would that from dreams of her I were divined -
When I sleep, her phantom would not steal toward me.
That when I sleep her image to me unfurled
وَلاand not يُلبِثُprolongs اللَيلَthe night المُوَكَّلَappointed دونَهاbarring access to her

Nor would the night stationed to bar access to her be prolonged
Be not by night's rotation through days done,
By her departure, as the nights recur.
Lest time should her beauty from me have furled.

I swore by the forelegs of the camels dancing toward Mina,
By dancing girls' hands I vow till I've attained
Their sandals dragging along at their pasterns.
My goal, though barefoot, trailing skirts, they spurned.

A poem from me shall surely reach Bilal,
Through poets shall odes from me long obtained
Its impromptu recitation lasting long on the lips of reciters.
Stream forth, though their rhymes were just hastily learned.
فَإِنَّfor indeed بِلالَBilal الجودِgenerosity لَستَyou are not بِواجِدٍfinding

For Bilal the generous—you will not find
For open-handed Bilal you'll find no peer,
Any armor of his without firmly interwoven links.
In hospitality and bounty he's unspurned.

And how many oppressive hands have come to meet
From tyrants' hands he saves men, slaves, things dear.
Their chastisement at the two hands of Bilal the generous!
With Bilal's hands placed over them, they're returned.

And Bilal, when he unsheathed his sword
When unsheathed, Bilal's sword such great havoc wreaked
For battle, would win it with marked warriors.
The enemy their garb with shameful stains had burned.

Swords, when their sheaths were cast off,
Their polished blades, from sheaths cast free, then reeked
Were polished on the crowns of men's heads.
With foemen's blood as blows were struck unconcerned.

He inflicts the gaping wound whose mouth roars
Bilal on steed unleashed makes blood from them squirt,
With thick blood, its moisture drenching the spearhead.
His spear thirsty, their necks by its blade churned.

I see the light of Mudar of the two cities shine bright,
The Misrs shine when dawn wakes Bilal in their midst,
When its Bilal stands in its midst, going forth in the morning.
Lightened by his presence, shadows all dispersed.

He is the one who dispels deeply tangled confusion,
By Bilal hard juristic problems are solved,
When its men are at a loss to decide a case.
When from just judgment scholars have turned.

Raised by Abu Musa, lofty as mountains towered,
The mountains of the earth reach, beneath the sky.
Nothing above Bilal's heights - sky or earth - were yearned.
