And hypocrisy's arch-impostor escaped; nor did

ʿAṭiyya survive, save by being more adept

than a frog skimming across every deep pool,

nimble when it meets the billows, and tailless.

And the two Riyāḥīs departed when the lances were levelled—

    Muṭayr and Barrād—in headlong flight.

And had they met al-Ḥajjāj among the horsemen, they would have faced

the reckoning of two Jews from Kaskar.

And had Ibn Saʿd met the horsemen, they would have struck

his tilted turban with a keen blade of hard steel.

And had Ibn Mūsā sent the horsemen forward before him,

he would have died; but Ibn Mūsā held back.

    لَهُم قائِدٌ قُدّامَهُم غَيرُ أَعوَرا

    He saw a band who do not break their pledges;

they have a leader ahead of them who is not one-eyed.

And Himyān—had he not crossed the sea in flight—

the horses would have raised swirling clouds of dust around him.

And Zahrān cast himself into Dujayl,

their hypocrite, when he found no crossing.

They left no head of Bakr ibn Wāʾil,

nor of the two Lukayzīs, without toppling it.

And the Yemenis' weaver escaped after

seeing the horses gallop, bay and chestnut.

I wished—at Ḥinnābāʾ, as you were fitting a packsaddle to

your donkey, shaven-headed, driving along with ʿAfzar,

consulting her about India, whether you two should join them,

and about China, Chinistan, or the Turks of Baghbar—

that I had seen Ibn Ayyūb, borne to the fore

against you by cavalry fifty thousand strong and more,

    إِذا دارَكَ الرَكضَ المُغيرونَ صَدَّرا

    on Ṣāʿid, or one like him from his war-steeds;

when the raiders redoubled their gallop, he took the lead,

racing the cavalry ahead of him to reach you first,

to gratify the believers at your expense and take revenge.
