مَكارِمَthe glories of أَيّامٍdays شَديدٍfierce قِتالُهاtheir fighting
And how many a course of 'steady rains' [perhaps 'humiliation'] he refused, and bought
the glories of days whose fighting was fierce.

And many a raiding troop of horses, bearing battle-marked warriors,
had its squadrons pierced at Bilal’s hands.
وَإِنَّand indeed أَباAbu (father of) موسىMusa خَليلُthe close friend of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
وَكَفَّيهِand his two hands يُمنىa right hand لِلهُدىfor guidance وَشِمالُهاand its left hand
Indeed, Abu Musa is Muhammad’s close friend,
and his two hands are guidance’s right hand and left.
وَكَمand how many صَعَّدَتraised aloft كَفّاكَyour two hands مِنof فَرعِa pinnacle of سورَةٍeminence

And how many a pinnacle of honor your two hands have raised,
soaring above hands whose longest reach cannot be matched.
وَيَومٍand many a day مِنَamong الأَيّامِthe days تَبدوappear نُجومُهُits stars

And many a day among days, its stars visible,
you witnessed, when unsheathing laid the swords bare.
وَمَنand whoever يَطَّلِبseeks مَسعاتَكُمyour noble striving تَرتَفِعrise بِهِwith him

And whoever seeks your achievements is lifted
by noble deeds whose mountains tower amid men’s hands.
لَعَمريby my life لَئِنsurely if كَفّاthe two hands of بِلالٍBilal نَماهُماnurtured them both
مَآثِرُglorious deeds of أَقوامٍpeoples عِظامٍimmense سِجالُهاtheir buckets of bounty
By my life, if Bilal’s two hands were nurtured
by the glorious deeds of peoples whose buckets of bounty were vast,
لَقَدindeed رَفَعَتraised كَفَّيthe two hands of بِلالٍBilal وَأَشرَقَتand shone
بِهِwith him لِلعُلىtoward glory أَيدٍhands كَريمٌnoble فِعالُهاtheir deeds
then they indeed raised Bilal’s hands and shone
with him toward glory—hands whose deeds are noble.
أَبىforbade لِبِلالٍfor Bilal أَنَّthat جارَthe neighbor of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
أَباهُhis father اِبتَنىbuilt عادِيَّةًan ancient monument لاnot يَنالُهاcan reach it
Bilal was kept from baseness, for Muhammad’s neighbor,
his father, built an ancient monument that none can reach
مِنَamong القَومِthe people إِلّاexcept مَنone who تَصَعَّدَascended مَجدُهُhis glory
إِلىto الشَمسِthe sun إِذwhen فاءَتreturned عَلَيهِover him ظِلالُهاits shadows
among the people, save one whose glory climbed
to the sun when its shadows returned over him.
وَإِنَّand indeed بِلالاًBilal لاnot تُحَجَّلُis curtained off قِدرُهُhis cooking pot
إِذاwhen سُتِرَتare screened دونَaway from الضُيوفِthe guests حِجالُهاits curtained enclosures
And Bilal’s cooking pot is never curtained off,
when its curtained enclosures are screened from guests.
وَإِنَّand indeed بِلالاًBilal يَقتُلُkills الجوعَhunger إِنif سَرَتblew by night
شَآمِيَّةًa Syrian wind بِالنيبِamong aged she-camels غُرّاًwhite مَحالُهاtheir backbones
And Bilal kills hunger when there blows by night
a Syrian wind among aged she-camels, their backbones white.
تَراءىseeks a sight of بِلالاًBilal كُلُّevery عَينٍeye إِذاwhen بَداhe appears
كَماjust as يَتَراءىcomes into view فيin السَماءِthe sky هِلالُهاits crescent
Every eye seeks Bilal when he appears,
as the sky’s crescent comes into view.
وَأَرمَلَةٍand many a widow تَدعوcalls upon بِلالاًBilal فَقيرَةٍpoor
وَمالُand the wealth of بِلالٍBilal حينَwhen يُنفِضُruns out مالُهاher wealth
And many a poor widow calls upon Bilal,
and Bilal’s wealth is hers when her own is spent.
وَلَمand never تَستَغِثsought aid from كَفَّيthe two hands of بِلالٍBilal فَقيرَةٌa poor woman
إِذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) دَعَتshe called إِلّاexcept that عَلَيهِupon him عِيالُهاher dependents
And no poor woman has sought aid from Bilal’s hands,
but, when she called, her dependents became his charge.
سَتَأتيwill reach بِلالاًBilal مِدحَتيmy praise حَيثُwherever يَمَّمَتheaded
بِهِwith him العيسُthe tawny-white camels أَوor سودٌblack ones عَلَيهاupon them جِلالُهاtheir coverings
My praise will reach Bilal wherever
the pale camels take him, or black mounts wearing their coverings.
فَدونَكَso take it هَذيthis ياO بِلالُBilal فَإِنَّهاfor indeed it

So take this, Bilal, for
its bearers will rise with it above the other rhymes.
